manual hubs

Does anyone know if there is an aftermarket manual hub conversion kit available for the 1995 Explorer?

'95s don't have locking hubs. They use a vacuum dis-connect axle.

There is a write up around here on how to convert that to manual. I forget exactly who wrote it, let me look for a couple of minutes...............

OK - here's my problem. We got our first good snow storm here the other day. I needed the 4wd to get home. But whenever the front tires spun I heard a loud "chunking-crunching-banging" sound from what sounded like the front axel area. I assumed my hubs had just failed. But I guess I'm wrong. Do you have any ideas as to what could be wrong??

Vacuum disconnect not working? Is the vacuum line connected and intact (no leaks)?

I'll sure try to check it out. I'm not at all familiar with these "new" systems. My Jeep still has a cast iron T-case and solid axels. But you have to dress like your're going sledding to ride in the thing. It's not something you'd want to commute in.

my brother has a 99 Ranger with the vacuum operated axles.. he went to a junkyard and found a 2001 Ranger that had been wrecked, removed the front axles and other related stuff and installed them in his 99.. Fixed the problems of not having 4 wheel drive...
