Alright, so I have a 92 xlt....4wd. Believe it or not it only has 85k miles on it, but that doesn't mean its not having problems because it is. I'm leaking tranny fluid. Its not a real fast leak, but everywhere I park I leave a little stain. I was wondering what this might be a symptom of. Do you think I can just keep filling the fluid up? and if so, how exactly do you do this on the manuals (all I know is there is a fill cap on the actual tranny under the car).
There is also a clunk coming from under the car whenever I start from a stop (whether reverse or forward). It's not R.A.B. or suspension, so I was wondering if that might have something to do with a larger tranny problem here. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Are you sure the leak is transmission fluid (red) and not just engine oil (black)? The manual transmissions in these models have rubber plugs on the top which tend to dry up and even fall out over time, letting some fluid slosh out and leak. These are best replaced with metal freeze plugs if the transmission is ever removed for service. You can easily drain and refill the transmission using the drain and fill plugs that are on the drivers' side of the tranny. You can pretty well see the hexagon heads of the plugs, one on the bottom for draining, and one closer to the top for refilling. Pull out the top plug first to allow air in when the bottom one is removed. Reinstall the lower plug, and refill the transmisson with Dexron III/Mercon ATF. The transmission should be filled right up to the bottom of the fill hole. Hopefully the fluid change will solve the clunk, perhaps caused by a low fluid level.
