The 5 speed manual trans (Mazda) in my 92 Explorer
(144000 miles) is showing signs of wear. It is fine when cold but in hot weather after the trans has warmed up, it is hard to shift into 1st and reverse. The other gears don't seem to shift as soothly as they used to, either, but the real problem is 1st gear. Often the shif needs to be jiggled, coaxed, or just plain forced (ouch!).

I read somewhere that this means that the synchros are worn out, or is the clutch not disengaging properly? I guess the trans needs an overhaul, or should it be replaced? If I get it overhauled, should I have all synchros replaced? The clutch would be replaced, of course, but should the slave cylinder be replaced as preventive maintenance? I recently had to refill the clutch reservior, but its the first refil in 10 years.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I recently had mine overhauled. It was grinding going into 2nd and 4th. When you get it overhauled, you need to have EVERYTHING done.

Overhaul trans
New clutch
New slave cylinder
bleed all fluids and replace
new shift fork

It will be cheaper while the trans is out. In all it cost me about $1700.
