Has anyone done a conversion from a automatic "button" transfer case (with that crappy electric motor) to a manual transfer case?

I have a 92 Explorer with a burnt out electric motor on the transfer case. Is it as simple as taking off that motor, and adding the linkage? From pictures in my haynes manual, the two transfer case's look identical.

This truck has an AOD in it as well. May have to invent mounting brackets for the shifter itself.

Has anyone done this?

Hi and welcome to the site...
Unfortunately the auto and manual T-Cases are different. As such you cannot simply unbolt the shift motor and add the shifter linkages... Several members have made various mechanical work arounds (I don't have the links so you'll need to search).

In the mean time you can check out theShift motor rebuild thead. It is very common for the shift motor to fail (mainly from lack of use and the geared position sensor "loosing" its position). Fortunately most problems can be fixed without the need to replace the shift motor.
