I've got a '93 Mazda Navajo 4x4 with a 5 speed manual transmission.

The past few days, when I try to downshift, the transmission, and not the engine, seems to start to "race" or "rev-up" when I have the clutch in and start to move the stick into the gear I wan to reach (say going from 4th to 3rd). It doesn't seem to do it when upshifting, though I think occassionally it does.

It doesn't grind, when I follow thru into the gear I want, but it does feel like it may start doing that. The only way I can describe it is that it sounds like some gear(s) are whizzing around at high speed when this happens. It's also been hard to shift into 1st gear from a dead stop too, but am not sure if it's related as I've had the hard shift problem off/on for the past year.

Any ideas or methods to begin isolating the problem?

Thanks

It sounds like the syncros are going bad. The syncros are used to speed up or slow down the gears so they can mesh smothley.
