ok, i've tried to do a search and find the answer, but i haven't had any success

how do you remove just the shifter from the transmission? i take the boot off and theres a threaded stud with a nut on it, and i'm not sure how to get that out to take the shift lever off

i'm sure its going to be really obvious once i figure it out, so thanks

also, i'm thinking about putting a custon shift lever on it, maybe a hurst shifter or something, that why i need to get the stock one off, anyone have any suggestions?

Get a Hurst Shifter. It is just listed as a shifter for a Ranger. Its the same tranny though...

to take it off you take the nut off and put it on the other side and tighen it it pulls the stud out.

awesome, i knew it would be simple once i found out what it was

You can download the complete instructions, with pictures, on the Hurst web site.

Its a very easy install, hardest part is deciding if you want to keep the old trim ring, or install the new one.:)

Another removal method:

If your bolt dosen't have a nut on the one side you can pull the rectangular boot back and get at three bolts holding the shifter to the tranny.
Then the shifter just pulls out.
Two of the three were philips head and one had a 10mm, i cant believe this is original, your millage will vary.

The original bolts have T30 torx heads on them. they can be removed with an allen wrench but you have to be careful not to strip them.

judt dont be like me remember which way it came off. otherwise have fun taking it off next time. its a pita if you put it in backwards..
