Anything I can do? It whines bad in 1st-4th but leaves in 5th. I changed the fluid to redline. But it hasn't seemed to help. I also put some J&B stop leak in it and it still leaks. Could the leaking be effecting the noise? Any ideas? thanks.

That sounds like the layshaft bearings are worn. They can whine for many years. You could strip it down and give it a good service or leave it for now and just turn up the music.:D . I think there is an oil additive that may help reduce the noise but if it is leaking that bad the seals want replacing so I would strip it down and change the worn out parts. On the old British Fords you could get a service kit for gearboxes which contained all the bearings/seals and syncro hubs etc. Hope this helps.
