I have a 01 explorer sport. I continue having idle issues where the car after warming up at idle seems to wanna stumble and miss alot. Seems to drive fine besides sometimes when u have to really push the gas down to get it to go but when its at idle it just stumbles really bad. No check engine light but when i took it to a garage they saw a old code for mass air flow sensor. They cleared it and took it for a drive and again the code showed up but no check engine light. Mechanic thinks its malfunctioning but not bad enough to throw a code. Would this possibly cause it to be idleing rough?

Did you try cleaning the MAF, and see if it runs any better?

I'm with Gregg. MAF cleaning is one of the simplest maintenance tasks you can perform, yet most people don't have a clue how to do it. Definitely worth a try. A can of MAF cleaner might set you back $3-$4 and last for a LONG time. There are a zillion threads/posts on how it's done in the archives.

OK so update. Mechanic thinks it might be the ECU/PCM. I was there with him and he unplugged the MAF, idle barely moved and the check engine light doesnt come on or cause a code to throw. The code they found was IAT which he said is normally with the MAF but no MAF code. Guys pretty damn good so i believe him. Found a 01 sport auto with same ECU box number for 45 bucks, figured its worth a try atleast.

Yea we both dont think its the MAF anymore either, but the reason he thinks the ECU could be a problem is because as soon as you unplug the maf the check engine code should come on right away, but it doesnt at all nor does it throw a code at all. The idle doesnt even change, so our first thought was maybe the ECU, figured 50 for a certified one isnt bad and its a quick throw in part just to see.
