I have a 93 XLT 4 door 2WD with the 4.0. I am wanting to put on some larger tires. I have a 4" lift on the truck now. What is the largest tire size I can put on with the 3.08 rear end? I don't want to work the engine too hard with 215,000 miles on it. Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the site!

First let me say this site is an excelent resource for all things explorer. The search function is your best friend. Almost any question you can imagine has been addressed already, including this one.

That being said

3.08 is a rough gear ratio to have. You dont want to go any gigger than stock tire size on them. They just are too damn high (low numericaly) FOr the 4.0 and especialy for the tranny. You will find yoursel heating the trans up super fast and burning it up. But there are ways to deal with this. You can find a wrecked sploder in a junk yard or something and take the axles. Look for somehing with 3.73 gears. With that you can go to a 31 inch tire comfortably. Really when it comes to bigger tires you gotta regear.

I guess that I will just stay with the 235/75/15 tire size and look for something pretty aggressive. I kind of like the "pre-runner" look. It has lots of space between the tires and the fenders. Thanks for your help.

just upgrade to a 8.8 with 4.10 gears and disk brakes

would be cheapest and easiest to find a complete rear from a second gen with 4.10's already
