Here ye , here ye. I embark, yet on another quandry to this 91 xlt of mine. I just burned out a tranny and somewhere in the midst of grinding the pea out of it to get it home and trying to restart it I managed to short out the EEC fuse in the fuse panel. I replaced the 30 amp fuse and whammo, she fired right up only to my disappointment she died in 5 seconds. I keep blowing these eec fuses instantly and would like some input to locate this short. Where is my short? Could it be possible hot tranny fluid burned a wire underneath somwhere?

I'm not 100% sure, but i bet you shorted the torque converter clutch (TCC). Time for a tranny :frustrate:

so basically i am in the dark with a wet match?

You can probably test mrboyle's hypothesis by disconnecting the circuit going to the Torque Converter Clutch. There should be a connector on the side of the transmission that you can unplug.

thanx....all i have is time. I will check in the morning. Im also going to attempt the DIY rebuild. Any advice? It was slipping between 3rd and 4th before it totally went out. What hard parts should I check and so forth

Fuse blowing

The two solenoids in the transmission have 12V to them and are switched to ground by the ECC. So an internal winding short could cause the fuse to blow. These solenoids are only about $50. If your tranny works well in manual 1 & 2 it may not need a full rebuild. There are problems associated with TCC and 3-4 shift solenoid. See www.atcdg.com in the tech section and scan down to A4LD. You may get by with just cleaning up the valve body, replacing a solenoid, and replacing the low/reverse servo O ring. Hope you join us rebuilders on the thread located at:

If shorts are the result of a mechanical wear you can replace the fuse with a headlight or two and then wiggle the wire harnes around. Normally the lamp will have a dull glow. When the lamp glows brightly, what you have touched is pretty close to the short. Saves a lot of fuses.

thanx

Is there a simple way to test to see if I can get by without the full rebuild. And if all I need to do is clean the valve body and replace the low/rev servo, replace the solenoids and the front main seal, do I need to completely remove the tranny? Also what all comes in a new shift improver kit and is it recommended?

one more thing

I am considering replacing the TC all together. This is the first rebuild I believe. Any suggestions on a distributor or just leave it alone

im brainless

well if i blew out the front main seal i need to disassemble the tranny anyway to double check for more exstensive damage. correct? and while i have it cracked open i might as well replace gaskets and seals.
