Has anyone seen/heard the new Mercedes diesels? (Not exactly new, they have been around for at least 5 or 6 years). They are SO quiet. I have seen them (and rode in one) in Europe, but never in the U.S. until now. From inside or outside you can't really tell it's a diesel, except by smell maybe, and inside, it is just as smooth and quiet as a gas engine. It also doesn't rattle your teeth out when you turn it off. Does anyone know what they did to it to make it so smooth and quiet? I love diesels, and I think it would be awesome if Ford could come up with one like Mercedes'.

Not sure exactly what they have done to motor to reduce noise level, but if you go to MercedesShop.com some of the users may be able to answer your question. It is a great web site and one that I have used with very good results.

I'm gonna move this on over to the Exploring Everything Under the Sun forum.

As for the Benz deisels, yes they are smooth. Unfortunately Mercedes stopped selling them here in 2000 (maybe even 99)

Quiet Diesels? Pfft. Nothing Sounds Good Like A Powerstroke Barreling Down On A German Sausage Burner With A Turbo Whining! Man, I Have Heard These Powerstrokes Zooming Around My Neighborhood That Sound Like Semi's! Long Live Knocking Diesels!

I don't think there was anything to special about the diesels Mercedes used to sell in the U.S. The new ones sold in Europe have direct injection.
