Mercon V or Dexron III

I'm going to be flushing my tranny this week. Is it okay to use Mercon V tranny fluid in my 96 XLT 4.0 w/138k miles or should I stick with the Dexron III.

Ford says no, that there is an incompatability in earlier clutch material with V. But, by 96 they probably started using the newer clutch material even though they didn't use V. First vehicle started using V in 96.
