Hey guys I was gonna trade one of my vehicles I no longer use for a 98 Mountaineer. I was offering to trade my 4x4 96 Ext S-10 for it. The thing had a few issues that made me run. I was wondering if I asked the seller to offer some cash included if it'd be worth the trade? From what I noticed when the truck started it idled great, but it cranked over slow like it had a voltage problem. It was very cold out here at the time but the engine was warm.

So it wasn't a cold start. No battery light or anything was on, but the check engine light was on. Guy said he didn't scan the codes yet. Cruise also didn't work on it, but the body was pretty solid with little rust. Should I offer him a trade if he could throw some cash on top of it? Truck sounded like it was on it's last legs to me.

Too many variables. Is this a v8 or v6? If it is an SOHC V6 run. If it is a V8 it is worth a further look. Could be weak battery or corrosion issue. Get the codes read.

Mercurys didn't have a v6 until 00.

Hey sorry guys I forgot about that info. It's a 5.0 V8 AWD. Just looked beat up inside. Both light covers on the doors were broken, the vents were held open by clothes pins, and there was tears in the head liner. I think the kid was fixing it up. The guy he bought it from obviously didn't take care of it as much which is why I ran.

the 5.0 v8 and auto trans in these trucks are pretty much bullet proof, however if it looks beat up it probably has issues. i think i'd walk away and not look back.

Mounties had the V6 in 99, possibly even 98.

Sorry. Should have quoted this before. Just lettin' him know.

If i'ts a V6 (especially a SOHC) I wouldn't even consider it.

I agree. I have the SOHC, but I've had it since new. I have maintained it well so I'm not surprised that I'm at 221k and still going. But you're right, without knowing the history or the seller I wouldn't consider it either.
