My wiper controls are all messed up, like when you push it in to get the windshield washer fuild to shoot out sometimes it works, sometimes I gotta like pound on it before it works, and then sometimes when its on like the third notch, its like will not make wipers move, then when it does come on, its like on fast for like three swipes, then dont work..its all screwed up, anyone have this problem, its on a 98..

Sounds like your multifunction switch is hosed. You might try pulling the end off and cleaning it. When the switches are assembled there is a large amount of grease put in the assembly. This has been known to cause problems with the wiper function. This thread here has a description on how to pull it apart. If that doesn't work, the replacement of the multifunction switch is your best bet. It runs around $50 at Autozone, and I don't think the Ford replacement is much more. It's not that difficult to replace.

the ford one for my thunderbird was over 200 bucks. my ranger does exactly the same thing, and on rangerstation they suggested cleaning it. i guess a lot of dust can get in there too. i just call it the phantom wipers, as they sometimes appear to have a complete mind of there own. its good for a laugh, and im too lazy to fix it.

Mine does the exact same thing- if I want washer fluid, i have to hold it in and jiggle it around and it usually squirts a little out before it loses the connection

I think they should rename it the "multi-f*ckedup switch" ;)

I'm going to have to replace mine soon for two problems: buzzing when signaling a left turn and inconsistent intermittent wiper intervals.

just cleaned mine, no help. I guess I'll have to replace it.

I can't seem to get the cap off of the end of the stalk.
