These tires were on an older Crown Vic but are super for snow and ice. It seems I have read somewhere that car tires were not suitable for a 4x4.

Are they strong enough for putting on my 96 stock 4dr Explorer?

Thanks,

Denis

I'm assuming it's a 225/60-16? i wouldn't be surprised if the load rating is good enough, but it'll be way too short. probably 3 or 4 inches shorter than normal. i had that size on my lincoln mark viii which had a similar weight to the explorer. (3700+ lbs compared to 4100+ lbs, respectively)

You can do it, but every time you touch the gas at all they are gonna spin like all hell since they are sooo small and your gear ratio is gonna effectively be extremely low. I think it would be worth it for you to buy some winter tires that will match up well to the Explorers stock size.

My tires are 225x75 R15s. Those are the stock sizes for my 96 XL. I know most afficionados are running bigger tires.

I have checked with a few tire specialists and the tell me I should not have any problems with these tires.

Thanks,

Denis

that's a good size for snow anyways. my stock tire size is 235/75-15, but i have 225's for winter. the narrower width concentrates the weight on a smaller contact patch. While there's a trade off for handling, it provides slightly better traction on icy roads. I bet up north where you are (and me, too!) you take all the traction you can get.
