Is there a significant difference in those ? I know that with V8 you have the full time AWD (correct ?) while with V6 you can drive with rear axle engaged.

Thanks

The difference is surprisingly small. The v8 is a very good engine. I know the v6 can be in 2wd mode, but I am not sure if all v8's are AWD.

dont know anything about the mileage diffs but not all v8's are AWD....i got a '98 XLT 5.0 w/ RWD only

my milage sucks on my V6 since its so under powered, 13 mpg around town and 18 on the highway. Get the V8 at least you will have some pick up.

V8 is auto 4wd - 2wd under most situations. My best so far with the V8 was 23mpg, worst was 12. Around town, 5 mile drive to work 13-16 depending on weather. The 6 speed tranny makes a huge difference.

bojans - I used to have an 99 Mountaneer 5.0 and that was full time AWD. Are the new 4.6 AWD when needed (slippage, rear wheels spinning) ? If yes, that's a good news since I need the V8 for my trailer but was considering the V6 with tow package.

Thanks

My V8 is auto 4wd, if the wheels start spinning 4WD kicks in. AWD is generally the term used for a vehicle where 4 wheels are ALWAYS under power and does not offer the option of 4 low. The Explorer, at least my 2006 w/ V8 is 4WD with the option of 4 low. 2WD 90%+ of the time.

Thanks

That's good they have real 4wd on the newer V8s. On the 2nd gen V8s they were all AWD. Ones they weren't just 2wd I mean.

V8 mileage

Only had my '08 for a month. My average driving is about 60 miles a day, 75% highway, 25% city. I have been getting 19 to 19.5 mpg on the in car computer and about 19.8 using a calculator. I am happy. I think there is more in it. I drove both the V6 and V8. The V6 is fine, but the V8 is what I got. There was a big difference in performance with very little difference in fuel economy.

For me the V8 is the engine of choice

I just got out of a two year lease on a 2006 4.0L 4X4 XLT. The replacement is a 2008 4.6L 4X4 XLT with much of the same options. Although the '08 is still new it's getting gas mileage that is almost identical to my '06, 15.7MPG to 15.9MPG respectively. (95% of my driving is city)

The V8 is much smoother and noticably quicker. I would highly recommend the V8.

Good luck on your decision
