Mileage on original transmission

With all the problems on this message boards, I am hoping for a brighter side. I am curious to know how many miles you guys have on your explorer, especially those over 100,000, on the original tranny?

I'm not the original owner so I'm not sure, but I think I still have the original tranny and there is 197K on my 92.

#1. 150,000 KILOMETERS on the original tranny.
#2. 196,000 Km rebuilt at 120,000,
#3. 188,000 km Original
#4. 201,000 km just now some problems due to slow leak.

The police obviously did good maintenance on their vehicles, as they were all in great shape when we got them.

I've got 111k on the original tranny, I'm going to be lifting it soon though, so i imagine i'll need a rebuild before too long...

95 xl 2dor 249,500km still work perfectly.Mostly hiighway driven.aux trans cooler installed since new.

Great! I have 100,000 miles on my 95' xlt and was planning to change the tranny fluid. Its kinda lousy when changing gear from 2nd to 3rd, but the rpm never goes beyond the 3. The fluid inside is still redish, should I still flush and change it. I am not the original owner, so I am not sure when it was last changed. appreciate any idea

176,440 miles. I had to get it rebuilt. The front seal was gone, leaking about half a quart every 3~5 days.

$1200 to get it rebuilt with a two year warranty. Don't get a Re-man, I have freinds with Explorers who used the Ford reman's and nothing but bad luck.

tranny 4- blew at 82000
tranny 5- making it past 106000

1992 XLT 4x4 with a4ld tranny

@ 165k we replaced Tranny #1 (rebuilt)
@ 236k we rebuilt the tranny again.. This time it wasn't the trannies fault.. We overheated to motor.. bad enough to actually melt some hard parts..
@ 253k tranny is still going strong.

114,000 miles. Rebuilt my M5 at 101,000 miles.

I've already posted recently but 103K on 1993 XLT 2WD with 4LD. I would bet that part of the difference in longevity is 2 vs 4wd. Mine was burnt at 94K when I bought it but with some flushing it seems to be OK so far..... The trick to flushing these when you change the trans fluid is to use extra transmission hose connected to the mettle oil cooler lines under the front bumper to do the following.

1. Pump some fluid out of your pan by starting the car and running fluid out to lower the level in the pan.

2. Drop the pan change filter and replace gasket.


3. Add clean fluid to a bucket in which you have inserted a hose going from the intake mettle line.

4. Add transmission fluid to your pan through the dispstick/filler hole (3-4 quartz).

5. Run engine so that fresh fluid is drawn up into the transmission and old fluid is pumped out of the torque converter and into your waist bucket.

6. When waist fluit turns bright red (about 11-13 quartz) the stop your engine, check transmission fluid level so it's reading on the stick but not overfilled.

7. Disconnect spare hose and reattach transmission cooler lines.

8. Start engine and run till hot, check and fill to mark as normal.


9. If you are really lazy you can probably pump most of your old fluid out and replace fresh fluid in the same way but it won't remove all the mettle shavings from the pan or replace your dirty filter. rc

145k and still going, engine swapped at 140K, probably should have pulled it and had it rebuilt , but "objects no money" with me so run it till I can't then deal with it.
This is the 4 speed automatic, 4.0 liter efi. 4X4. Great ride.
