MileMarker Hubs

hey guys-
this past weekend I joined the elite club of members whose factory auto hubs decided to crap out at the most inopportune time (...sitting in a ditch on a trafficless road at 3:30 in the morning, in my case). sooooo, I know that just about everybody has lent their endorsement to Warn's manual replacements, but I don't plan to drive this vehicle very much longer and I've already spent at least twice what she's worth in repairs on her. in other words, I'm looking to save a few bucks at this point. in the thread search I did, it was mentioned that MileMarker just came out with hubs for our early model explorers, only I can't find them anywhere online and the nearest Auto Zone is about 300 miles from here. has anyone out there been able to get ahold of or even seen them anywhere? and if-so, where, how much, etc.? one more question: does anyone know if MileMarker makes their own auto-to-manual conversion kit? if not, will the one from Warn work?

hubs...

The conversion kit consist of two big round nuts on each side to prevent the bearing from comming out, so I thing that any kit would fit with any hubs(manual that is). For hubs I have Warn, but I recently heard that spicer does the same for much less, but then I dont know where to find them.

You should be able to get your auto hubs working again for free. I know of three different sets still working after making a spacer to go inside.

Noone I know of has tried them..

I have shattered a Warn manual hub (yup, they do that..)

If you get them, please post about it!

I picked up a pair of Warn hubs from Pep Boys and a pair of MM hubs from Autozone. FWIW, The MM hubs and kit cost less than just the Warn hubs.
WARN = $149, MM = $112,
Warn kit = $49, MM Kit = $35

The jury is still out on which hubs I will install. The kit is the same for both..

The look and feel of the hubs is virtually identical. Both are black with black knob. The guts look about the same too (it is Warn's patented design according to something I read).

The only big difference is the detail work on the alum. hub casting. Warn has much better detail and better designed o-ring groove. Which makes me prefer the Warn hub. I'm afraid the MM hub seal is ineffective, but I can swear it would affect performance. For $35 more I probably won't sweat it... too little money to bother with detail analysis. I did e-mail MM just in case they have more info about their "different design."

Mile Marker Design

I got a reply from milemarker about their design.
First they confirmed that their hub was only available in black. I was really hoping for chrome, since WARN hubs only come in black... I might ask them if they can paint some silver instead of black..

Second, they were sure that their o-ring design is good and effective. They have not had any complaints about the seal design, but stated I could increase the performance of the o-ring by applying silicone to the sealing area.

I have also inquired about becoming a distributor of MM hubs. If anyone is interested in buying hubs, check out the Group Purchase section. I am going to do a group purchase direct from Mile Marker for about $105 per pair.

Kinda off the original subject but does anyone know where I can get replacement o-rings for my Warn hubs? I called Warn but they said they're only available as part of a rebuild kit which comes with a bunch of other crap I don't need and don't intend to pay for. I mentioned the "liftime warranty" and he said it didn't cover the o-rings.

O-rings

I got my first seto of o-rings (for auto-hubs) from the dealer as part of a "kit." {Manual hubs will use the same size 0-ring becasue the mating surface is determined by the rotor and spindle size} All the kit included was two 0-rings and two 4X4 decals for the hubs. Then the tire dealer trashed an 0-ring, so I checked Pep Boys. I just bought a pack of three o-rings that were the same size. I went with the next size up in diameter for better sealing.

Hope this helps. Not sure who else sells o-rings, but they were only about $4 per pack (much cheaper than dealer).
