Missing subwoofer in 98 Mountaineer (and other audio issues)

I just bought a used 98 Mountaineer. It has a Mach audio system with cassette/CD and a 6 disc changer in the center console. I have come up with a few questions. I have already figured out that the blank display on the radio is a very common problem, and I am working on getting that resolved. The next issue is that it appears that there is a compartment for a sub in the passenger side in the rear. However, I noticed there was no sound coming from there, so I looked through the plastic grill and there was nothing in there! Is it possible that this sub was an option that was not chosen by the original owner, or do you think someone removed at some point? I don't know why anyone would go through the work of removing it. I'd like to get a new one at some point, so does anyone know the specs (I know nothing about stereos or speakers, so "dumb it down" for me if you can)? The final issue is that the magazine cartridge for the 6 disc changer is missing, but, it looks like I can find one of those on ebay.

Welcome to the site, if it has the grill, then it had a sub in it at one point. You should be able to replace it with any 8" sub. It can be modified to fit a 10" sub as well.
