mobil 1 fiasco: who's switching? who's going down with the ship?

Believe it or not folks figuring out how long each part will last and how much it will cost the company I work for to warrant / contract maintainence on products is what I do - trust me we don't loose money on service agreements or on the warranty included with the stuff we manufacture. I am certain Ford does the same - they know when the parts of your truck are going to wear out and when it will no longer be financially feasable to fix it.

Every product has a life cycle and the engineers that built it did their homework and can predict very well when and how it will begin to wear out.

yes, im aware that the life of a part can be calculated fairly accurately (im an engineer myself, and im aware of the different failure mechanics and how to calculate them.) the point i was trying to make is that, many people think theres this conspiracy that when you buy a car with a 75k warranty, every part in the vehicle is designed to break at 76k, thats just not true. now, im not saying they design these things to go a million miles without any problems, though, some vehicles do; but they dont deisgn them to break at the end of the warranty period just so you have to go buy a new one. however, because youre in the business of testing that stuff, you would probably have a better idea than me, and i have been known to be wrong before ;) but im not gonna go through life bitter at every company that makes anything i ever buy because the product might break after a long time, heh.

Where is the link backing this up. No one I know has heard of this. This is a pretty serious alligation TBomb, anyone?

calm down there. i just replied to your email, but since youve got caps and bold all over the place, implying that youre pretty upset about this (and seemingly with me), ill tell you again here: try a search, theres a handful of threads talking about this, citing specific sources and details; youll find it. i think leenjen found some info just a few days ago.

on another note, i agree that maybe we should get back to the original topic here.

Couldthey state this on their own website if it wasn't true??

"Tested under grueling conditions of competitive car racing, Mobil 1 has
the power to keep cars up and running under extreme conditions. Mobil
1 fully synthetic lubricants and products provide unmatched wear
protection, extreme-temperature performance and help provide
exceptional control of deposits and sludge. And, they exceed the
toughest automotive standards of new-car manufacturers. Use Mobil 1
with SuperSyn™, and you'll get the long-lasting protection that your
vehicle deserves."

More from the Mobil website:

"All motor oils are made up of base oils and additives. In general, fully
synthetic motor oils contain non-conventional, high-performance fluids,
such as polyalphaolefins (PAOs). Semi-synthetic oils (also called
"blends") usually use a small percentage of non-conventional,
high-performance fluids in combination with conventional oil.

To meet the demanding requirements of today's specifications (and our
customers' expectations), Mobil 1® uses high-performance fluids,
including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of
additives. Each Mobil 1 with SuperSyn™ viscosity grade uses a unique
combination of synthetic fluids and selected additives in order to tailor
the viscosity grade to its specific application."

A family friend worked in Dearborn at THE Ford prototype shop for over 40 years. When Mobil 1 came out they did a comparison and it came out on top. Prior to his retirement, they did the same thing (about 5 years ago), and low and behole, Mobil1 ran the longest with the LEAST AMOUNT OF WEAR AND TEAR, when compared to the "other Syn's".

It is a damn good product. 50 buckshees for an oil change is F%^KING ludicrous!

Rick brings up an excellent point. A company like Mobil does not need the litigation that false advertizing might bring.

Yeah it is a little pricier but for me I think it is worth it.

think of it in this possitive way:

Buy a case each time you change your oil and filter.
Use 5 maybe 5 1/4 quarts.
after 5 oils changes the next one is free!:D

The other way is:

it really isn't any more money (maybe $5) when you do it yourself than taking your truck to jiffy lube and paying for a conventional oil change. And it takes about the same amount of time.

Well i see that Mobil is a huge company but they can at least afford any lawsuits that they get. You know that tornado thing ... do you honestly think that it will increase your horsepower by 25% and give you better gas millage just because it creates a cyclone in your air intake? I mean come on now ... There is false advertising everyday late at night with those infomercials.

So where is your PROOF that Mobil 1 is anything less than synthetic oil?

Synthetic?

I use Mobil products throughout my vehicles..but

IMOO There is no real such thing as "Synthetic" I think it creates more hype than it should. ALL oil starts out as good ol Dino Crude period. The word synthetic in my opinioin is something that was created in a lab w/o crude at all. An example would be a gasoline that was created from corn I could honestly label as "Synthetic gas" maybe a poor example but Mobil ! is just a better oil than the regular ones because of the refining process, and because of the additional processing and better stock oil that is used it is the better oil, the technical data sheets speaks for themselves.

Mobil 1 oil, ATF, gear lube.

... and enough fools purchast that POS that they still make big bucks after setteling the litigation, Too bad jail time isn;t involved.

But Mobil wasn't satisfied. So the company bought a BMW 325i with a 2.5-liter in-line 6-cylinder engine. The company decided to go for broke and run the BMW 1 million miles.

The BMW spent four years on the treadmill, 24 hours a day, mostly at 85 miles an hour, but with varied speeds, too, down as low as 45 miles an hour to simulate everyday driving.

Mobil followed BMW's recommended service schedule. Along the way it changed the fan belt and hoses and did other hardware maintenance. It religiously changed the oil.

AT THE END of the road, when the engine was taken apart, Mobil's engineers discovered that the wear measurements were the same as the manufacturer's specifications.

comments?????????

Aldive that article was written in 1996. Mobil 1 has allegedly changed its formulas twice (the latter is the cause of this thread). No one is saying that Mobil 1 didn't used to be a great oil. People are saying that Mobil 1 has now let its quality slide down hill too much.

Like Rick earlier posted... show us the proff.

I still see no proff. In fact, I found this in the links that YOU pointed to....Dead Link Removed

OK Here's proof that it really doesnt matter what the hell its made out of.. Mobil 1 is excellent. My friends brother in-law bought a NEW toyota truck and drove it for 220,000 miles before the head gasket went It was maintained its whole life with NOTHING but Mobil1 This is a known fact since I changed his oil with a Toyota filter EVERY TIME and 10W 30 Mobil 1. When I took off the head with my friend to change the gasket; the honing marks were still visible on the walls of the cylinders.............. enough said..:bounce::eek:

Amsoil claims that Mobil 1 is now a blend. Mobil claims that it is still not a blend and differentiates between the two.

I'll believe Mobil.

That should be good enough right there. Creative advertising. Its probably as "fully synthetic" as it can be, plus a few additives. I don't think anything is wrong with Mobil 1, or any synthetic lubricant for that matter, no matter what it contains, 95%, 90%, 80%, 50% synthetic materials or whatever. If it works it works. Too much emphasis on whats in it and not enough on what it does. Motor oils have to meet minimum wear test specs and all that, so even the brand X motor oil you get at any store is fine if it meets the current API standard (SH, SI, SJ, etc) and stuff like Castrol advertises even its base GTX brand exceeds the Japanese wear tests...sooooo...if synthetic oil like Mobil 1 winds up exceeding these specs by a mile and passing these tests with flying colors, especially better than other oils or brands, its doing what it says its doing.

Maybe, just maybe, Mobil has changed its spec for Mobil 1 to improve its product? :D

Oh yea, on the BMW million mile test..uh if you could run an engine endlessly, with the same speed, rpm, and load all the time and just have the oil and everything changed without ever stopping the thing, (that means an endless supply of fuel) you'd have so little wear and tear on it for the mileage it wouldn't be funny. Real world is low speeds and high speeds, lugging and overrevving, starting in below zero temps ten times a day and running for hours in 100+ degree temps in summer. :)
