Ok, after determining the cause of the problem I decided to replace my defective modulator.

I did a lot of reading on the forums and felt I was prepared for this; not! Got everything apart to reach the modulator without problem (I did not have to take out either seat, just pulled up the carpet and laid it over the seats). Access cover off, heat shroud off, bracket and bolt off, vac hose off. 30 minutes. No problems there.

Now a big problem! My old modulator is so rusted that it will not move. After about two hours of trying my son and I decided to put the thing back together and try another day. Tried soaking it in WD and a multitide of "tools of force". It just won't move. My concern is that it will break off and we will have to take the tranny out to get it replaced.

Any suggestions on how to get this thing out? Also, how much punnishment can it take before it snaps off? Sure we could take it to a shop, but it's "our" project car ... and we are having a real blast with it.

Thanks!

Shane

Did you remove the double bolt that holds it in? There is a heat shield that comes off first then another nut that holds the half-round bracket in place (same bolt or stud). It then comes out with a little force if its stuck. Do not drop or lose the little pin behind it though!!!!!

Yes, got the double bolt (nut first) out and the u-shaped bracket that holds it in. Bottom line, the modulator is so rusted that it is almost "fuse" to the tranny case.

Ohh. I have never seen one that stuck. usually someone doesn't get the other nut off and the clip is in the way. A little "persuasion" after the clip is off and it pops out normally. I know you have tried about everyhting. Just keep soaking it and try a pipe wrench or a strap wrench. They are thin metal, but it will come out (maybe in pieces though). Just don't lose the pin behind it. I have not removed one through the acess cover, so I dont' know how much room is there to work in.

I realize this is probably been resolved but i figure i will throw my .02 in here anyways. I find that using a punch and hammer, tapping it(not beating it) in different locations will loosen up the valve enough to allow you to wiggle it out. excessive prying will break it, so if it is stuck tap it to break the rust free.
