After much deliberating as to solutions for my particular towing needs and ride comfort, I settled on a pair of Monroe Max-Air shocks for the rear. Per Monroe's instructions, some shock applications are marked "L" or "R" for right and left side. Both of mine were so marked. Out of the box, the left shock is about 3/4" longer than the right, which I supect, is to compensate for the left side sag early Explorers are famous for after a few years. My initial response is favorable and I will give an update after towing. Mike

Evaluation as promised: I just finished towing my travel trailer 700 plus miles round trip. Unloaded with 30 lbs. of air, the Max-Air shocks give a nice softer ride in the rear. I removed my gas Tokico rear shocks and still have the front Tokicos on. Loaded, with the trailer hooked up, it takes 70 lbs of air to level my Explorer and trailer. Steering control is now better. The air shocks do not seem to give as much control on bumps or uneven road surfaces as the rear Tokicos. Another option for Explorer owners to consider would be to try helper springs on the rear and keep good rear gas shocks which might give better overall control, although a slightly rougher ride.
