Monroe Replacement Air Leak

I just replaced the stock air ride shocks on my '97 explorer 5L with the Monroe 4005 shocks.

I cut the electronic ride control cable and tied it up out of the way and cut the air hose from the stock shock. I saw that it's a black hose with an inner white hose so I cut back a bit of the black outer house and slid it into the new shock.

When I turned the car on and let the compressor engage it sounds like there is air coming out near the connector on the shock. If I wiggle around the hose it stops.

When I did the passenger side I stripped off a bunch more of the outer hose and it doesn't seem to be leaking like the driver side.

How do I go about removing the hose from the new shock so I can strip off more of the outer shell and get it in further?

I see the little green ring and people have talked about pressing on it to release, but that doesn't seem to do anything.

Also, does anyone know how far to strip it back?
