1999 Explorer Sport
Hi all,

I'm a newbie too. I know, I know...get with the program. I'm trying, I really am. Anyway, I just bought a great '99 Sport two weeks ago, and I love it. I'd like to put a "Real" HID kit into it, and I'm a bit perplexed by the whole thing. Can anyone recommend a good real; not simmed 9007 HID kit? I'm an I.T. guy and can build a 16 way server blindfolded. That being said, how difficult would the installation be for me to do this myself? What is the power draw difference? Would I also want to consider a higher output alternator?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated, and I am more than willing (although this isn't what this forum is about, my mommy taught me how to share :) ) to answer any low level computer questions that I can in return.

Thanks,

Laurence

Welcome to the site!

I have True High Low HID kit in my 01 Street.

The install is very easy of an install. Just basicly power, negative, two relays and two plugs. That is about it.

As far as a brand, I recommend Phillips. No with that being said. There are a lot of different branded kits that use Phillips parts. I have had 5k Kit and now have upgraded to the 8k High/low kit.

It is a mechanical moving bulb that moves the ark from high spot to low spot.

I have the FET Catz kit. Extremely high quality of components. If you can still find them, I would recommend it. The only problem is that the aftermarket kits are now illegal unless you get one that replaces the entire headlight assembly such as the sylvania kit.

As far as power draw. True HID kits only draw 35 watts as opposed to 55 watts of a standard low beam halogen. This means you will actually be saving some wattage. Any upgrade to alternators won't be necessary.
