Ok, I want to switch to 4.11 gear in the X, I have a grip on this part. I even found a garage that will do the work for a reasonable price.

Now, I want to take the old gear set from the X and put it in my other car. But, here is where I need some explanation. My CV has an 8.8 rear (2.73 gears), but it uses the 28 spline gear instead of the 31 spline. I read in one recent post on this topic that this means I would have to change out the axels.

I thought that the spline count refered to the number of teeth on the end going to the drive shart - so all I would need is a flange. Is this wrong thinking? If so, what does the count refer to?

What, if anything, needs to be changed to make this work.

What kind of car are you putting these in and what ratio are they?

As far as the spline count goes - that refers to the teeth at the end of the spline where it inserts into the carrier - ratio will not affect axles in that way at all.

You will need an install kit - complete with shims, bearings and crush sleeve to swap out correctly - about $100.

Good questions - at least my confusion is getting narrowed down at bit. The car I want to put the old X gears in is a '90 CV (Crown Victoria) with - yes - 2.73 gears. In '90 the 5.0s had 3.08 or 3.27 and the 5.8s had 2.73. I happen to have the 5.8 Now you know why I want to swap in the 3.73 once they come out of the X.

But I am still confused. I thought the X had 31 splines and I am told that the CV rear is 28 spline. Will if work? What other parts/mods will it need?

You can swap the gears in. but 3.73's with a 351 will give you huge torque. The 3.73's should work along with your existing carrier in the CV. The spline-count has nothing to do with the gears - only the carrier that the gears are attached to.
