Over the last 2 weeks my Ex has stalled twice (after about 5 minutes of driving) but i didnt think much about it, this morning after say 2 or 3 minutes while i was at the lights i noticed the engine light is now on. I was sat at the lights in drive and the revs were going up and down from between 500 to 1000 quickly. I put it into Nuetrel and it stopped and settled at my normal 600rpm. put back into dirive and it was fine.

This is the first wonter period ive owned my Ex and have only used it the last couple of weeks in the cold weather. When i start her up it seems to rev between 500 and 1300 intermittently for a minute or two, is this just the automatic choke because its cold or somethgin else ?

Its funny as i called in to a garage yesterday to see about a service as its been serviced every 5,000 since the firt owner got it, it was last serviced at 50,000 and it now has 58,00 on it and i was fealing guilty, my dad asked how the car was last night and i said fine and told him aboutt he service and he said well maybe the cars running fine BECAUSE its been serviced every 5000, then this happens this morning!

if i get a code reader will this tell me why the engine lights on ? just a bit worried as i use my Ex for a 500 mile trip every 2 weeks.

Appreciate any input.

Ok, after doing what i should have done before posting this(searched the forum!) im suspecting this is a classic case of the 00M12 thing ?

There was a guy (Duncan?? i think) who replied to a message of mine a while ago who i believe had a Ex repair place in Aylesbury if my memory is right ? if you read this can you drop me a PM and let me know if this is something you could do and how much it would be.

cheers
SI

This sounds to be like the inlet manifold gaskits gone brittle and letting in air......It is part of the 00m12 kit- but you can get the gaskits alone from Ford if you have no rattles on start up. Access is tricky and I have to climb on the bumper and kneal on front to reack the bolts at the rear. Please be sure to torque correctly as the manifold is plastic, can distort or worse case crack. If you need more advice- I am glad to help mate, call me anytime 07894390125. It is one you can do at home- just need patience, beer and a prayer that the weather holds!

Cheers H, i know you mentioned this when i saw you last year and you checked if the 00M12 had been done and it hadnt. Gonna see how much it'll cost me to get done by a garage i think first, then if its too much might tackle it myself. Have all the tools and a double garage here its just the not knowing part of it i guess.

cheers again

id say its the inlet manifold gaskets as well your engine code will most likely be p0171 and p0174 if you can borrow a code reader this should comfirm this for you

With the tools, a double garage and help from somebody like H, no problems at all. Better than forking out hard earned cash to a garage, who probably have never done one before, so will be finding their own way:thumbdwn: The gaskets are a bit fiddly to make sure they are correctly seated, but if you do it yourself at least you know you will do a good job. Most of us seem to have done the job ourselves - quite easy with a bit of patience. Must admit, does help if you are 8 foot tall:D Good luck - keep us posted with how you do.
P.S. the manifold bolts and oil gallery plug have Torx heads - these might be the only additional tools you might need - I had to buy a set when I got my Ex.

Cheers, im probably gonna give it a go myself, not sure when but sometime over the next month.

Tools arent a problem and ive rebuilt a few Ford V6 essex engines in the past so it shouldnt be a problem, im 6` 2" so probably have a slight advantage over a few people:) As i said its just the fear of the unknown really.

Good advice from the guys mate. Well worth doing. Its lovely to have an Ex that starts and idles straight off. If I remember right its a tight squeeze getting the manifold past the wiper motor. Other members might confirm this.
Kev.

Took mine off from the front first so had no problems getting past anything at the rear - I've got a lot of extra lpg gas pipes at the rear. However, the thingy? sensor that goes into the front of the manifold is a bit difficult to clear taking it off this way.

also it might be worth doing the front tensioner while your there that way you wont have to take the inlet manifold off again ........im not sure on the part number but someone here will know it ......it should be about £30

Yeh i'll definatly do that aswell, had a read through the guide here a few times and looked under the hood of my Ex and it doesnt seem too bad to be honest.

Is the UK part number for the OOM12 kit the same as the US part number ?

Fcat dude if you or indeed anyone is stuck- I am free in the day mostly so call if I can help. 07894390125 Some jobs can seem massive and a worry- but to be honest the Ex is pretty easy to work on cept for reach and height issues! I think I have done most common problems on both my Exs so feel free to shout anytime for an on the phone how to guide!
