I have got a very iritating problem with my 2000 4.0 sohc X 19,500 miles.
When I change from D to R I get a loud clunk.
I've checked all the axle, driveshafts etc and we're now looking at the transmission. It seems to engage gear very hard.
I took it to the dealer today. We hooked it up to his computer and run every test on it and it passed everything.
My dealer is going to pressure test the trans tomorrow (not exactly sure what he's going to do here), but if this proves negative, I told him about this site and he said if you guys have any ideas he is open to suggestions.
By the way i'm in the U.K. and Xs are a pretty rare beast here, so any help you can give would be great.
Many thanks.
STEVE

Does it "clunk" when you shift from Park to Reverse, or only from Drive to Reverse? Does it do this cold, hot, all the time?

I assume that your tranny fluid is full and ok. It sounds like a bad U-joint/drive shaft to me. Anyone else?

I also have a 2000 Explorer, and it did the same thing, it was a bad U-joint. Dealer replaced it under warranty. I would have your dealer investigate this scenario.

I am not saying that this is your problem, but I really don't think it's the tranny at only 19K but you never know. Since it is still under warranty, hell tell them you want a "bloody" new tranny!! :) Your dealer has the tools to diagnose the problem, if not, he has access to the Ford tech people!

dont shift from drive to reverse... that will seriously screw up your tranny...... anyway, if its clunking the way you described, it probably is the u joint on the driveshaft, or play in a suspension component that susports a driveline component

A high idle can cause that

is the engine rpm normal?

I am confused, what do you mean by that?

He probably means don't shift your transmission from drive to reverse without pausing in Neutral to allow the transmission to properly (not forcefully) shift out of drive.

No it does not make any noise at all when cold.(but this only lasts for about a minute).
Yes it does make a noise from park to D or R.
Yes I do always come to a complete stop foot on brake and pause in N when shifting.
Tranny fluid has been changed and is full.
RPM is normal.
Well I've heard nothing from dealer today
Here's hoping!!!!!

I though this was caused a lot by your slip yoke. And if you lube that....it usually helps.

I forgot that yes I did lube the slip yoke
cheers

Ok, got it. I just automatically assumed that people came to a complete stop before shifting, my bad!:p
