My 93 XLT has an all original drivetrain, and either 239,000 or 339,000. We are not entirely certain. Either way that is pretty dang good. The motor used to occasionally make a certain clacking noise, but only at WOT. The passed week it has started to do it more, it even makes some clacking noise at around 65 MPH, and anywhere around half throttle it will do it.

I have also noticed that the acceleration has gotten worse.

Does this sound like a dying motor? I know that the 02 sensors havent been changed in awhile, neither has the air filter, or the spark plugs. But I dont think any of that would cause the noises. It has been a great vehichle, so cant really complain, it was my moms, then my sister d rove it, then I got it.

What should I try to do to keep it puttering along for awhile longer?

I would like to do a 5.0 swap, but that is more time and money than I have right now. Could the 4.0 be rebuilt to be alittle more powerful without sending my MPG to hell?

Just kinda worried about it right now,
Denny

Do you know what spark knock (aka engine ping or predetonation) sounds like? That would be my first suspicion, and it's a common problem for that 4.0 OHV. Several relatively simple and inexpensive fixes that cure most "ping" issues. Run a search and see what you find.

Clean your MAF sensor and reset the computer per instructions on this website. Also, if you have a FRAM oil filter go get a motorcraft and throw the FRAM in the garbage pronto. Good luck

Absolutely! I changed my oil and Fram filter and my 4.0 has quieted down significantly using a NAPA Gold filter instead.
