I was interested in buying a 2001 Sport Trac with 167,000 miles on it. That kind of mileage scared me away. But going forward how are the motors on these?

yes as long as you keep up proper maintainence on it they last a long time. it should have the 4.0 sohc motor which has proven to last 200k with no issues
