I just got a 1991 X and it has 168,000 miles on the motor. It preforms well and all but there is a chater that comes for the engine the whole times it runs. People say it sounds like a diesel. The chater get kinda anoying after time. I tried the spark plug thingy and it didn't stop. Also every now and then the engin makes a pop like something tapping on a pop can from the passanger side engine and I lose power..it soon stops and I have power back. What the heck could this be? Some people think its the vauvles, but would removing each spark plug one at a time tell me witch area the damaged or unajusted vauvle is? Becuase it never stoped

It is most likely the lifters. This is a common problem with the OHV 4.0L. Try dooing a search for "lifters" or "lifter noise." There have been several posts about the problem.
