Ive seen quiet a few posts for people looking to mount amps to the roof of the ex. Actually, here are two mounted in the rear hatch of my mounty. Nobody ever sees them, plus i loose no space in the rear. Heats no problem as these amps have fans, plus ive wired a temp gauge to monitor heat. Summertime they do run a little warm but nothing out of the operating capacity of these things.

Looks real sharp! Where did you run the wires up? And how did you mount them? Isn't that a lot of weight to be on your headliner?

The headliner was cut out and custom metal brackets were welded to the frame. There are 2 crossmembers already there so it wasn't that hard. If you look at the other picture in the forum , they kinda fit about 2 inches deep into the headliner with enough room to breathe. The wires run through the headliner / roof to both the sub in the trunk as well as the headunit and Alpine unit.

MECP certification test states ~ mounting amps upside down is a :nono: They would have to have some quality cooling fans, especially in the summer. You know, heat rises...

are you sure they're not right side up sitting on the brakets?

xtant amps have some of the best thermal management of any amps around. Have you ever seen the fans on these units....they are like window fans and can cool the units pretty well. As i've said, ive got a temp gauge hooked up to them, however they have never cut out due to overheating.

Xtant amps dont HAVE a shell. HokieBert is right, mounting an amp upside down will shorten it's life dramatically. However.... Xtant amps don't have shells. Whether they are upside down, or right side up, they cool off of a centrally located fan-to-block cooling wall that is a stand alone unit. upside down, it's all the same thing to an xtant.

Normal amps have shells that cool off the fins and since heat rises, mounting a fin cooled amp upside down just makes the heat rise off the fins into the circut board and literally BAKES the board. Like a potato in the oven :D

Somebody thank Hokie for being considerate of your equiptment :) Fortuntely by either a great idea by the OP, or just dumb luck.... he used one of the only amps in the world this can be done with.

I'm an EE and I've done ET work for 8 years professionally, but you don't have to be an engineer to see how it all works. :)

very cool, and original.

The cooling issue was considered when choosing the amp. I've always been a big fan of xtant amps, and yes I realize that with almost any other amp they would have probably torched the car mounted this way. Ive had this set up for over 4 years now.

And thanks one last for explaining how this works.
