Mac,
Don't worry, there's places to go, and people to go with! You'll just have to drive over an hour to get anywhere that you can wheel. Do you know where in the area you'll be living? If you need info or opinions on anything to do with moving here and living here, feel free to email me!

I am in the navy so I plan on living in the Santee or Lakeside area. Far enough away from the rest of 'em, but not too long a commute.

When passing through San Diego on the 15 fwy, there is always the Rosarito beach area. Just south of Rosarito in Baja, Mex are some sand dunes that are always a blast, and see plenty of activity in the summer. The area is called Cantamar Dunes, and is about 35 minutes south of San Diego once you cross the international border. Maybe since you'll be in the Navy, you'll have clearance to 'wheel the area near Camp Pendleton?

Isn't there an Indian Reservation that's opened to 4wheeling and camping. I remember that others on this Board had a "Serious Exploration" outing there a few months back. Was it Trukkhaven?

May be my fear is unfounded but I would be concerned to be in Mexico 4wheeling. Who knows, the local constables may like your rig so much, they may find ways to give you trouble and confiscate your rig. Or worst yet, get it stolen. Have I been watching too many movies, paranoid Dead Link Removed">

Call me crazy, but when I was in college, I stayed at some friends house in Tijuana so I'd have a place to crash after a night of drinking on Revoluccion. For New Years '95, the night of the 30th, 5 of us slept in a parking structure in TJ until 11a.m. when we were allowed to check in to our hotel room. We drove to the hotel at 10:45, and entered our room at 10:59 a.m.!
Forward 5 years, my fiance and I went to Discover Baja, and I purchased a 1 year insurance policy (full-coverage) for $160. I also carry a copy of my birth certificate in the truck along with proof that I own the truck. I never drink and drive (esp. in Mexico), and I don't ever transport drugs in my truck either. All of that can get you in a world of sh*t. If the cops in Mexico try to confiscate your truck, just ask the cops for their badge # and the number of their patrol car. This will scare the cops, because they know that you know that what they are doing is illegal. If the cops ask you to follow them to jail in order to pay a ticket, tell them that you know that it is legal for a U.S. citizen to take the ticket, and mail it from the U.S.
If you're not familiar with the border region, its best to travel in a group. I'm so used to the TJ/Rosarito area that I travel all of the backroads to save time and $$ from paying the people at the toll booths. Just don't drink the water.... Dead Link Removed

I don't know if that is being paranoid. I will not take my truck down there unless it is an organized event. I have seen to many of my friends loose Dirtbikes, Quads, and even a Truck. You get stopped for some stupid little thing and next thing you know they are taking your stuff. We did get the truck back but it cost almost $3000.

Not all of Mexico is bad, and it is a blast going down there, but you need to watch were you go and what your doing. I only takes one incodent to ruin your time down there (and cost you lots of money). Good thing though is most of the police down there can be bought off if your have the money. Just be careful.

Hey Mac,
Just wondering if you made the move yet. Let us know when you're ready to check out the trails.

Yeah, we made it, but the Green Mistress is in the shop right now. We blew a seal in the water pump in Los Angeles and limped the rest of the way down to Lakeside. Since it was already at the shop and my extended warranty runs out in July, I had them fix everything they could find. So far the total is up to about $2000. This includes a water pump, thermostat, torque converter housing(bell housing-apparently there is a pressed in seal between the bell housing and the actual transmission. When it starts to leak, the only way to replace it is to replace the entire bell housing.) oil pan gasket, rear main seal, and a tranny pan gasket. All this for a $50 deductible:D I should get it back tommorow.

Off Road Driving in Southern Ca.

I have been driving virtually every weekend off road in southern California and have discovered a bunch of trails worth taking. First Joshua Tree has a number of trails worht taking Specificlly Old Dale Road which runs between Highway 62 & I 10. It has over 17 mines located off of this road including a great trip onto Brooklyn Mine Jeep trial. Up this you will find eight virtical mine shafts and a few horizontal ones. Second trip I also reccomend is Berdoo Canyon which runs between Dillon Road and Geology Trail in Joshua Tree. There are also a bunch in the Lucern Valley and a wonderful tril going from Pioneertown to Big Bear. There are also trails around the Sulton Sea and North of Highway 62 running up to Needles. SO whatever you are looking for it is out here within a 2 hur drive of San Diego

Joshua Tree/Rattlesnake Canyon

Hey, I'd love to drive the Pioneer Town to Big Bear trail with you guys in (late) July. It's dubbed "Rattlesnake Canyon" by the 4x4 clubs, and is said to be a blast. I've done some friendly runs up Berdoo Canyon and that place is so fun. Last month, I drove the "Black Eagle Mine" road to the closed gates, and it was a total blast. We should get a group of Fords together for a trip soon.

Joshua Tree?

Hey Guys,
From Joshua Tree, how do you get to Dale Rd, and Berdoo Canyon? I'm 45 minutes away and would love to check them out.
Thanks,
Rick
