I've got a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer (same as an explorer) and I'm getting ready to upgrade my stereo system with some more bass. I've been looking at the MTX and Clarion custom fit enclosure boxes that take the place of the factory rear quarterpanel compartment on the rear passanger side. What is better, the MTX or Clarion? How do they sounds? Should I save some money and just get a box for 2 10"s and a seperate amp? I'm not looking for super loud bass, just a nice solid, tight thump.

I would do the MTX one. It has a much better quality sub in it. You can get the MTX unloade and put a really good sub in it and buy a seperate amp.

mtx makes better subs than clarion. clarion is great when it comes to headunits and mutimedia.

buying two 10s in a box with a seperate amp to drive them will sound much better than the small stealth enclosure. a more natural bass responce as opposed to the thud you get from those thunderforms.

What about a custom made box that fits under the rear seat? Could I get 2 10"s in there, or will I have to settle for 2 8"s? Has anyone tried this?

I've got an MTX Thunderform I'd sell you. It's got a 4 ohm MTX Thunder6000 10" sub in it. I had it installed last winter and have since upgraded my system. It's still in that location, so I'll have to take it to the install shop and they'll remove it for me (free).

This unit does NOT include the amplifier, but you'll probably want a more powerful amp anyway. I had an MTX RT2200 bridged on it. It's a great sub and well taken care of...

let me know...

How much do you want for it? What kind of condition is it in? Does it sounds pretty good?

It sounds excellent and is in great condition considering I haven't used it for very long. It's installed in a brand new 2001 Explorer Sport. I don't even remember, off-hand, how much I paid for it. My receipts are at home. drop me an email tonight at michaeljordan@onebox.com and we'll chat. I'll give you a good price--including shipping.
