I'm the proud new owner of a '94 explorer XLT. I love driving it and it has plenty of power, but no sound. I want it to have that deep throaty sound. Nothing overly obnoxious or anything, (i don't want to be pulled over or anything) I just want people to know its coming. I've been looking at Cherry Bomb's Vortex and such. Any suggestions or opinions?

im currently running a cherry bomb turbo on mine and i love it its very quiet but hasa bit of rummble but for $30cdn i cant complain very happy!

i had the cherrybomb turbo, and i hated it. i ran it for an hour and hated it so much i rolled for a week with no muffler. THAT was awesome, but it killed mileage...

so i have a flowmaster exhaust, for what YOU want, i'd go to an exhaust shop, have them run a flowmaster 40 series exhaust with 2.5inch pipe from the muffler back. or if you can afford it, from the catback.

go to exhaust shops, they can do it quick, cheap, and better. for what i wanted a kit was 260$, at the shop it was 160ish.

good luck

what kinda sound do u get off of that flowmaster? and whats a catback? ive heard of them but am not sure what it is?

I got dual 40 series flows on my 01 sport and it sounds real loud and deep.

Sam's is a differnet generation, and he has duals, so it won't sound the same.

I like the way it sounds, I only have 2" piping though. from idle to around 1200-1500 rpms you get the growl flowmaster is known for, but then quiets down as you rev higher. I like it, at highway speeds you don't hear it, but if you're coasting through a parking lot or something and tap the throttle it'll "jump growl" as i say.

2.5" piping should give you good backpressure, and also give a little bit louder sound.

Btw, Sam reminded me, to run true duals on a first generation explorer is next to impossible. You might be able to do a single in/single out muffler (means there is one inlet, and two outlets) but I would stick with a single in single out and just run 2.5" piping from the cat back.

Also, a "catback" system is when you replace the exhaust system from RIGHT AFTER the catalytic converter to the end of the system, hence "catback"

thanks for the advice on the flowmaster. i might try that with the 2.5 if you get a little bit more sound. any other suggestions?:D

don't be mad if it doesn't sound loud enough when you get it. after a few weeks of driving it'll change and get better. mine was extremely quiet, but now it's peeeeeeeeeerfect

There are plenty of videos on you tube of ex's with flowmasters you might look into that.

You can do like mine with a single inlet dual outlet and get "fake" duals. I love mine and there's nothin fake about it!

ya, but does the single in/duel out take away from the sound or affect the backpressure at all?

I have no idea I imagine my small pipe is doing more to hinder sound than anything else.

I think the cats and muffler keep enough back pressure for most situations.

I have a 96 XLT 4.0 and I don't know if that makes a big difference in sound but this is mine with a flowmaster 40 in place of the stock muffler with a 3 in. tip.

I don't have that setup anymore but maybe it will help you make a choice.

I love the way my cherybomb pro sounds its really really deep and rumbles. I've had a flowmaster, magnaflow, and cherrybomb turbo(crap) and I wish I had of started with this one. On explorers above 92 just about any muffler shop can run true duals since all the do is cut it at the Y-pipe and run the pipes from there. 91-91 use a single O2 sensor in the middle of the pipe so there wouldnt be a place to put it on true duals.

How dothey get around thegas tank?

They dont. You run them both down the passenger side and then they are bent to exit out both sides of the back bumper. Thats how most mid and newer model full-size chevys(excuse my language) are run. Older vehicles and cars like mustangs, camaros, ect.. have them run on opposite sides.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents.

I just installed a Cherry Bomb Turbo on my 94 XLT.

And it was so quiet at first, then over the past few weeks it has been getting a little louder, but still not quite where I had hoped.

Any one else have this muffler on there X? If so does it get any louder over the next month or so?

Thanks,

Magnaflow

Personally I'm a huge fan of Magnaflow, and they definitely do outflow Flowmasters. Not that you'll get a huge gain out of it, but I still like knowing that I've got the Wide Open Performance as Magnaflow calls it. I actually bought a muffler that's smaller than I probably should have gotten for the size of the engine, but that's ok, it's still 2.5" in and out single and I used a Y-Pipe to bring it down to that. Should've probably gotten the 5x11 with dual in single out, but I'm happy with my setup. Granted I probably have a different sound than you since I have the SOHC. But it's not too loud at all. I've got the 4x9 I was more worried about clearance when I bought it than I am now, but it was $60 for the polished stainless steel and it's got a heckuva warranty. That would be my choice, but you decide what works for you.

Thanks,

That muffler really isnt that loud in the first place and its pretty cheap(IMO). It will probably get louder as the insulation material breaks in and then again as it deteriorates. If you want a louder muffler you probably should think about switching over to either a different Cherry Bomb muffler(preferably one that doesnt use insulation like the PRO) or the flowmaster(non delta-flow as they are quieter) lineup.

Yeah I didn't want it too loud as the wifey would get mad.... It's starting to grumble but the engine noise is louder than the muffler. I wanted to get a flowmaster 40 but when the wifey hear the sound clips she squashed that pretty quick....
