Mufflers/Exhaust systems

I think the magnaflow is a good compromise between the two, you can still here it without it being overly obnoxious.

I had a flowmaster 40 muffler on my 94 and I got it recently on my 92. It's quiet at first but gets louder in a couple of weeks. the sound is awesome. Wish it could be a tad louder but for the cost, it rocks. I think for what you want, a flowmaster 40 would be perfect.

My EX, sounds better now that it's broken in and I added a cone filter.

Better low end and actually high end power, better throttle response, saw a little over 2mpg increase with exhaust & intake.

from what i have read on the thread... when i install my

ORIGINAL 40 SERIES FLOWMASTER MUFFLER ( single in offset, single out center )...

it will not be loud right off the bat, it will take a little bit of time to build up the aggressive tone...

what exactly is the cause of this ?????? - is there something to do with the truck computer having to adjust or does the muffler itself have to be broken in ???? - i dont mean to sound stupid if i do, but i am very curious as to why this is...

thanks guys

Danny

No your muffler will be loud right off the bat and also the sound will change(either the volume will go up or the tone will change slightly or both). Becasue the muffler "breaks in" due the exhaust heat and is much more noticeable on mufflers that use insulation to soften the tone rather than baffles.

the "breaking in" is caused by the high exauhst heat caused by the cats.

On baffled mufflers it heats the metal and causes it to harden, therefore changing the sound and possibly raising volume.

On glasspack mufflers it heats the fiberglass which can cause them to break, and blows out loose fibers. Therefore changing the tone and volume.

The effect is much more noticable in The glasslacks I've heard.

Heck, I didn't know that about the Flowmasters, learn something new everyday I guess, I thought it was just the mufflers with batting that got louder. My Magnaflow didn't get much louder on me, but of course once I sealed up the leaks that would make it a lot quieter. So I very well could have been quieter before and got louder. I've read that the material they use is supposed to be better about not breaking down because it's a steel wool or something like that. But the cheaper ones will use fiberglass, which I've heard the Dynomax mufflers will eventually get louder. Wish I could give you a better idea on the sound of it, but you've got a different engine than I do, so the sound and connections would be much different. If you do decide on a Magnaflow I'd check at partsplusautostore.com they had excellent prices on their mufflers and I think I got a steal on the polished stainless, most places were selling for about $100 and I found it for $60 there. Good luck, this is probably one job where I don't worry too much if I don't get it just right because at least it's easy to fix, for the most part.
