i beleive my multi function switch is going out. I care for two explorers, my baby, and then my cousins, both are first gens. He lost his turn signals a while ago, he had hazzards still, but no turn signals, and everything else seems to work fine. Now my truck seems to be doing the same thing, i dont have any turn signals, no beep or signal that they are even on, i mean the arrow doesnt even light up, but the hazzards work. I searched and that pointed me to the multi function switch, but now i want to know how i can test this before i go out and buy one. Is there any thing i can do to make sure, i mean be positive this is bad... thanks a bunch

the hazzards use a different relay then the turn signals.

it may very well be your multifinction switch, we all know they go out. BUT first check the flasher for the turn signals in the fuse panel, much more common.

the hazzards use a seperate flasher.

can i just switch the hazzard flasher and the turn signal flasher for dignostic purposes

I believe you can, but the hazzard in my 88 is on the back side of the dash fuse panel = PIT Ato get too, not sure where it is in your fuse box :)

They are like $3, or grab one from another car.

k thanks
ill tell you how it turned out, im going to go try it in a couple mins

i just pulled a flasher out of my old ranger, i believed it worked, but no dice in the x. I dont have cruise control hooked up anymore so i dont know if that would function properly, my door chime is sparatic and (im sure this is an unrelated problem) my rear defrost doesnt work

lookin more like the multi function switch to me

I have heard of people actually taking them apart and cleaning them if you want to attempt this on the super cheap. I would just replace it.
IN my BII (281k+ miles now) I am on my 3rd one?
My aftermarket headlights dont help.......I have burnt up clips and wires, relays and switches with my higher wattage aftermarket bulbs, but its okay the parts last about 3-4 years and I just grab an a**load of spares at the junk yards.

one more question before i go buy one, would it be possible to use the switch off my 86 ranger, i mean i know it uses the whole lever and everything, but do you think its possible?

nope :) they are different

They are really cheap at the U Pull it, I can get multifunction switches for Gen I's and Gen II's all day long for $5 ea.

the 86 ranger steering column is all different then a 89+ steering column, it wont mount up, the wiring wont plug in.

How much are they at Autozone? lifetime warranty?

Every part for my 88 has been discontinued, lets just say I have a "plethera" of spare switches, relays, wiring clips, and stuff I cant get anymore. BII's are also getting more and more rare in the junk yards. The little rear wiper/sprayer switch I have had to actually open and rebuild to make it work because I only have two. I glued a piece of a match (thin cardboard) onto the brass finger inside the switch in order to make up contact again in that little sucker. What I am getting at is you can likely take it apart, clean it, and make it work again if you really dont want to spend the $20+ for a new part...

its not that im cheap, its that my leg has been in a cast for 5 weeks and ive been out of work, so im trying to spend as little as poss. untill i get back to work.

thanks for all your help, i really appreciate it

cheap = good
Its like beating the "man" when you can make something work with some hot glue and spit.
