their is a 4x4 tranfer case module that takes the signal from the switch and sends it to the transfer case motor. I have them go bad more then motors. Base part# is 7e453.

I just finished replacing my 4x4 module. I was a little worried because alot of people reported hearing clicking noise coming from the non working modules and mine made no noise or anything. But after replacing it, the 4x4 works perfectly.
I priced the module with Ford dealer and it was $240. I wound up purchasing it with a local auto parts supply distributor for $130 and it had the Ford name on it all the same.

2001 SPORT TRAC 4x4 Problem

What is working: display comes on when switched into either 4wh or 4wl, 4x4 will engage the front wheels/drivetrain.

Problem is once engaged in either 4wh or 4wl, a hard jolt is felt/heard from either the transfer or the front hubs...almost feels like one or both sides on the front go in and out of 4w drive. The loud thump/jolt gets more frequent at higher speeds (over 20 mph). Then when disengaging 4w drive, it feels like it takes about a minute for it to acutally completely return to 2w drive and then the thump/jolt happens as it goes back into 2w drive. Any ideas?:salute:

Sounds like you are doing this on dry pavement and maybe have a tire with low pressure. If this is the case, it's a no no to engage 4wd on dry pavement. 4wd is meant for situations/surfaces where the tires are able to slip. On dry pavement the is no slippage and it can cause a great amount of binding in the driveline if all the wheels are not spinning at the same rate. Which they don't spin at the same speed while turning or when you have tires at different pressure levels.
