I am actually considering getting a totally different vehicle after this one. I have had my 98 Explorer since 2001. So far, it has been hit, while stopped at traffic lights FOUR times siince 2002.

Summer 2002: Lady on cell phone hits me while I wait in line of traffic
Dec 2003: Lady in crossover SUV hits me while I wait in line of traffic
Feb 2007: Man in pickup with plow lift hits me while I wait at red light
Nov 2007: Lady in large SUV hits me at high speed while I wait in traffic

The common thread? All times I was hit, I was already stopped and waiting for the traffic ahead to move and for the light to change. All times, the other driver claims not to have seen me, or had a lapse of attention at that moment.
All times, both taillights plus the third brake light were tested and working.

This time, the truck suffered extensive damage as the bumper was totally twisted under until it punctured the spare tire underneath, the back door was bashed in, the side quarter panels bent. The CD/radio unit was ripped out of the dash from the impact, landing on the armrest, restrained only by the wires.

My first two hits in 2002-03 resulted in no discernable damage to my vehicle. The plow truck that hit me mostly damaged the back door with the plow lift arm hitting it. A tiny nick in chrome on the bumper resulted from the rest of the plow frame hitting it, thus, I was given a new back bumper too.

So here I am, just months after getting a new bumper, back door and paint job, and this lady hits me as I wait for a light to change. It was the worst of all the crashes so far, having caused real extensive damage.

I am so fed up with the regularity and the recent rise in the number of inattentive drivers. Now I have a back injury and have to go to physical therapy sessions. I was released from the emergency room Wednesday night, 8 hours after the accident happened. I'm growing increasingly angry about this. Something needs to change, either in education or in our laws, to force people to choose focusing on the road ahead, over fussing with makeup, cell phones or DVD players.

At this point, I'm ready to buy one of those decommissioned state highway dept plow trucks to use as general transportation. I'm tired of being hit so often. Either that, of find an ironworks shop that can fabricate a 2 tonne solide iron rear bumper for my Explorer. I can't take it any more!!

Just get a Giant sign put on your vehicle that says "DONT HIT ME DAMN IT!"

Nah, seriously That sucks man. Like. 85% of my close misses were with people on the cell phone. 95% of those people on the cell phone were teenage girls. (these figures are based off of those in my own city and my own close calls and observations.)

I don't get why guys have to pay more when the girls ain't even paying attention. Their sitting there texting their friends.. (not talking about women. but teenage girls. 16-19. They absolutely SUCK at driving. I always end up having to leave so much braking distance for them as well.. cause they ride my damn bumper.

Get a sporttrac they are great. they ride nicely and are rugged. Their ride hight is higher so if they say they couldn't see you they are obviously mistaken. unless they are driving a semi. heaven forbid.

Funny story, this chick speeds past me like FOOSH. apparently she was in such a rush to get home.. I basically followed her because I was waiting for the accident. She was weaving in and out of traffic. we come up to a intersection and both lanes are turning off to their respective lanes and she switches to the left to avoid the right lane slow down and almost slams into a Jimmy. she then rams over to the right lane again exceeding 95MPH (I was on the phone with the cops reporting this license plate cause it was getting REALLY dangerous) and shes weaving left and right dodging traffic. Finally I get a police cruiser behind me and I let him by but by then this chick slowed back down to 55 MPH (apparently cause I was the only one keeping up at 95 MPH. the police waved off (apparently to a more important call) and I followed her into her subdivision. she takes off after the turn off and I quickly but cautiously follow. I get all the way back to her street and copy down the address and hand it off to the cop who met me in the subdivision. Lets just say her dad just about exploded. 3 counts of wreckless driving and exceeding the posted limit (95 in a 55). Her dad was on a death roll.

96, similar

Yikes, glad no damage to you... :)

My 96 got bumped, but never hit hard... I had a sticker just above the handle on the window - it wasn't anything, but people said they were looking at it when they bumped me. They were trying to get closer to see it and just weren't paying attention.

I'm going to get a bumper sticker that says "If your reading this PAY ATTENTION TO THE ROAD"

I got the estimate from the body shop this week: $2641 for repairs. It says this is just a *visual* estimate and that they may find other damage that was not noticed on the visual appraisal.

I'm seeing a doctor about my back injury from this collision. The doc, after examination, determined that I have whiplash and a lower back injury as well.

These kinds of things become VERY frustrating when they happen so frequently. I hadn't even waxed the back tailgate yet, as I was waiting for the paint to fully cure from the last repair, when this collision happened.

Looks like a long uphill battle ahead...

Finally, here are the gruesome images from this collision. Based on other rear end collisions we've seen with Explorers, you can well guess that the lady was doing a considerably speed when she hit me.

It's finally in the repair shop as of Monday morning.
I'm driving a rented Honda Civic, which I could barely fit into. Had to drive 300 miles to a job site and back in that little car and found it very uncomfortable with my head hitting the ceiling. It was the only car that Enterprise had on the lot, so with an urgent job schedule, I could not wait for another day.
Hopefully I get the X back before Christmas.

are you sure you don't have one of those funny license plate stickers? "Hit me, I need the money"

serious - glad you're OK - from the pictures, can't really make it - looks like the frame is bent??? unless I'm looking at a bend?

You need BIG spikes coming out from the back, top and bottom.

that must suck my friend jim he's always a magnet for rear end collisons too every car he had someone rear ended him
