I am actually considering getting a totally different vehicle after this one. I have had my 98 Explorer since 2001. So far, it has been hit, while stopped at traffic lights FOUR times siince 2002.
Summer 2002: Lady on cell phone hits me while I wait in line of traffic
Dec 2003: Lady in crossover SUV hits me while I wait in line of traffic
Feb 2007: Man in pickup with plow lift hits me while I wait at red light
Nov 2007: Lady in large SUV hits me at high speed while I wait in traffic
The common thread? All times I was hit, I was already stopped and waiting for the traffic ahead to move and for the light to change. All times, the other driver claims not to have seen me, or had a lapse of attention at that moment.
All times, both taillights plus the third brake light were tested and working.
This time, the truck suffered extensive damage as the bumper was totally twisted under until it punctured the spare tire underneath, the back door was bashed in, the side quarter panels bent. The CD/radio unit was ripped out of the dash from the impact, landing on the armrest, restrained only by the wires.
My first two hits in 2002-03 resulted in no discernable damage to my vehicle. The plow truck that hit me mostly damaged the back door with the plow lift arm hitting it. A tiny nick in chrome on the bumper resulted from the rest of the plow frame hitting it, thus, I was given a new back bumper too.
So here I am, just months after getting a new bumper, back door and paint job, and this lady hits me as I wait for a light to change. It was the worst of all the crashes so far, having caused real extensive damage.
I am so fed up with the regularity and the recent rise in the number of inattentive drivers. Now I have a back injury and have to go to physical therapy sessions. I was released from the emergency room Wednesday night, 8 hours after the accident happened. I'm growing increasingly angry about this. Something needs to change, either in education or in our laws, to force people to choose focusing on the road ahead, over fussing with makeup, cell phones or DVD players.
At this point, I'm ready to buy one of those decommissioned state highway dept plow trucks to use as general transportation. I'm tired of being hit so often. Either that, of find an ironworks shop that can fabricate a 2 tonne solide iron rear bumper for my Explorer. I can't take it any more!!
