My 98 XLT 5.0 Finally Goes Under The Knife

I think the driveshaft length is specific to the transmission. You may have a driveshaft that was sized for a 4R100 rather than a 4R70.

That's not true from every thread I ever seen .

But does it match your experience?

There's a discrepancy somewhere between the consensus of most threads (that a 4.6 driveshaft will work) and the fact that they don't for some people. My theory is that it's a transmission difference, but haven't been able to confirm.

Yes it does.

The truck I got my 4406 from had a 4R70W tranny and a 4.6 and a front drive shaft so I grabbed the DS while getting the 4406. So there goes your theory I guess.

Yep. Time to come up with another explanation of why some work and others don't...

By the way - how long is the driveshaft? I need to figure out if the one I've got in the garage is going to work when the time comes.

If I come across it I'll measure but from what to what am I measuring?

Maybe weld to weld on the long piece.

Sounds like a reasonable way to do it.

yes!!! LIFT!!!!
Just did a 5.0 in 98 Ranger using 4406e from 97 F150 4.6
the 97 F150 4.6 front shaft fit right in with the conversion U joint.
Sometimes the 4.6 front shaft is slightly too long, I am not sure what the differences are, but when they are too long you CAN cut them down at the slip yoke about 1" per side to gain a 1/2" of slip at the yoke, then they do fit.
Just for the record.
