My AWD BROKE... not...UPDATE....

WELL, IT FINALLY WENT.

It broke today. It went from the soft pinging noise for the past 2 years to loud banging noise just today like someone was taking a sledge hammer to my drivetrain.

I parked it and crawled under the X. I grabbed hold of the front shaft and shook it. It was loose at the transfer case and rattled. Thats the internals of the transfer case. The shaft coupling is secure.

I guess I get a new TC.

The only thing that sucked was Ford roadside assistance said they couldnt find a tow for me and that if I wanted to get home I would have to find a tow myself!! This is in URBAN SAN FRANCISCO BAY!! That just floored me.

71,130 to be exact.

how many on yours?

72,638 and quiet as can be. Did have the whole front end done. (ball joints, control arms and other knocking kind of stuff) Did change the $1000.00+ oil pan gasket also. (11.5 hours book time on that)

I have found that AWD failures are very rare. Its interesting to see that you have almost identicle miles to mine. I have not had to replace any front end components.

Work done is as follows:

new fuel pump
rebuilt front and rear diff (Was not needed)
idler pulley
wiper switch
exhaust manifold leak
new stearing rack (not needed)

All under extended warranty.

So far all was under warranty also. I can also add:
rear wiper motor,
radio,
res/set cruise switch,
lock/unlock switch pass door twice,
rear defog switch,
the fuse for the cigarette lighter twice because the mechanic can never figure out how to remove the center dash without blowing the fuse.

my dad's got 63k on his 97 awd not a peep and work's awsome!..now you can swap it for real 4x4..lol

Thats right, I forgot (you reminded me wise guy):

rear wiper motor,
radio,
cruise cable,
lock/unlock switch drivers door (only once:D )

I'm at 120k and still going strong w/ my AWD, but I know V8BoatBuilder just lost his front driveshaft around 115k and is looking into the 4wd conversion pretty seriously. Looks like you're selling the explorer anyways so I'm sure this didn't help change your mind to keep it :p Good Luck!

Nothing is set in stone yet. If all is replaced to new condition then I will hold on to it for a while (still under warranty). I like not having a car payment.

If they dont do a good job then it gets traded or sold. No doubt I will miss my X if it goes.

It turns out that I was wrong. It was the front drive shaft that people were telling me to check.

I was sure it was the AWD. Well, I got it back today and it drives like new again.

Maybe I will hang on to this truck for a bit.
