Over spring break my brother and I finally got to build a new front bumper for his 1992 Dodge Dakota.

The tubing is actually 1-1/2 inch (ID) galvinized sch. 40 pipe :p

The brackets in between the two pipes are 1-3/4 by 3/8 inch flat steel.

Here's a pipe in the bender...

My brother notching the angular pieces of the grill guard (this took a while because the angle was so steep)...

Everthing welded and on the truck...

Awesome job y'all did! :D

looks great!

Wow, you guys are getting pretty good at making bumpers! Nice job man.

Looks great! Needs more lift though. :D

I hope you had good ventilation welding that galvinized pipe. :smoke:

We welded it in a shed with the garage door (on the shed) open. We did not experience any adverse effects from the fumes.

It looks awesome. I am glad to hear you had the door open at least. Believe me, breathign that stuff will make you sick (been there-done that). How well will the primer/paint stick to the galvanized pipe? Our boss used to make us etch it first to make it stick. I never tried any without it.

i think it would look better if you made the center parts outta soem tubing, isntead of flat stock, kinda how my old tube bumper was done....

My Lord son, where are his safety glasses? I cut a beer keg in half with a die grinder yesterday and needed a freaking face shield otherwise i would've been toast!

I second that you wont be making any more bumopers with a glass eye.....I dont care how good you are with a grinder, it will happen......

Bumper looks great!

bumper looks real good for being made out of pipe :p I also agree with using safety glasses, every tool i have in my shop has a pair with it (drill press, bench grinder, ect) esp when using the drill press and any grinder, HSS bits explode pretty good whey they bind. Also wearing saftey glasses under your welding hood is a really good idea, I have had weld spatter when stick welding go under my hood and pit my saftey glasses before
Also something ya might want to look in to is a Tubing Notcher HF has a cheap one, its not a ProTools notcher but it will probably make life little easyer for a weekend fabber

I wear glasses under my welding hood too. And ear plugs if I'm not welding on a table or otherwise easy area. Bouncing slag in ear is not fun.

Bumper looks good.. hope you didn't breathe that galvanized fumes!

1st. bumper looks good....
2nd.....and now for some fun

hmm I wonder what happens when you turn your body before lifting the welding helmet? Is that flesh I smell?
