My Explorer Gets 100 Miles Per Tank Of Gas.

I dont think i could use a full tank in a 100 miles full throttle the whole time.

Maybe the odo/trip meter is not right?

Does that ever happen?

Could the gas tank be leaking? Maybe a locking gas cap. Are you towing something?

How do I check the FUEL PUMP REGULATOR? Im sure there is no leak in the lines, no smells of gas coming from it. I think a sensor is out but don't know which one it out. The Tempurature sensor, throttle position and many more could cause the gas mileage to be bad. There are alot of things that could cause this. I used the tester that schucks lets you use and it tols me the TP sensor. I heard from a friend that it will tell you the last thing wrong with it, then if you test it again it might tell you something else is wrong? Can anyone recommend a good tester for the sensors? thanks....

The Fuel Pressure Regulator sits on the fuel rail and can be tested using a gauge screwed to the schrader valve. Values at idle should be:
Vacuum hose attached 30 to 45 psi
Vacuum hose detached 40 to 50 psi
Fuel system hold pressure after 5 miniutes 30 to 40 psi

You mention using a tester, post codes and that will help tremendously. The 91s are an EECIV/OBDI system. See the stickies in the 'under the hood forum' for details about the fuel system and codes.

I doubt if it is the ignition. Is there black soot-y (maybe thick) like residue inside of the opening of the tailpipe if you carefully run your fingers around the inside opening of the tailpipe? That is a sign of the truck running re-e-eal RICH. Seeing a BLACK cloud behind the truck when you are driving is another sign that you are burning too much gas. Having someone follow you to see if they see a black cloud (sometimes faint) might help too.

I haven't ever tried, or had to try testing my injectors like someone else suggested. That sounds like a lot of work.

With the ACTRON "Code Scanner" I purchased back in the late 80s to early 90s (at WalMart) that I use on my newer cars and trucks (cheap-o unit as others say) I was told by a mechanic that a good "rule of thumb" is to replace the FIRST THING that the scanner displays as being bad, especially if you are getting multiple failure codes. He said the first part could make all of the other items behind it "look bad" to the vehicles computer (as I call it).
After replacing that first part drive the vehicle for a while. IF the part was the one making all of the others look bad all of the other codes will clear themselves within time OR you can choose to "Clear the Memory" and see if anything else comes up after you drive it.
My Code Scanner hasn't failed me yet, yet, yet. I've used it on everything from Mark VIIs to Mustangs to Explorers to E150 Vans to F150 Pickups to Crown Vics and Grand Marquis.

I'd like to find a reader that will read Anti-Lock Codes. I accidentally plugged my scanner into the Anti-Lock maintenance port when I first went to check my 1993 XLT 4x4. It didn't work right on that port. I was wondering why the pin-outs were different than all of my other vehicles. Then I found the correct port to plug it into and it worked much better. I have a 2nd bank EGO sensor failure code on mine if I remember right. Another project for another day.

Hey man just wnated to say i know how ya feel, i used to get 150 per tank, and i ahve a new gas guage, lol. MY problem was a mix of plugs, intake manifold, valves, and my trans.

Im about 260-300 a tank now and im a high flying diver, my engine is always ove r 3000 rpm on a daily basis!

Good luck with the fix!

You should probably make sure its going into overdrive. It may feel like its droping into OD but its actually the torque converter locking up. When it does this it will only drop a few hundred RPM. The heat from the exhuast overtime will cause the O-rings in the actuator to dry and seize up. I just suckered a guy out of an Exploder because of this. He was wondering why it had such bad gas. Its a simple fix but a pain in the ass because of the location (beside cat) If you get the code off of the actuator cover (circular, passenger side) any tranny shop should be able to get what you need. This is very common in Exploders and Arostars.
