Hi,

I just bought a used '95 Explorer in Sweden.

I left my Explorer to a garage to sort out the problem with my trailer not receiving the correct blinking signal.

They did connect everything and when they tried to start the car it didn't start.

The start "engine" turns, but they/I can't hear that the fuel pump is kicking in.

The problem is that where I live people have very limited experience with Explorers.

They think the fault code might be 121 based on the blinking light on the instrument panel.

Questions I have are:
a) Any suggestions? Is this the issue of inserting a master code? If so how is it inserted?

b) Where can I get a list of the error messages?

Your help/assistance is highly appreciated.

/Stefan

If you send a private message to MrShorty, he can give you links on how to pull the codes. '95 should be an OBD-I, so it is very very simple.

Try replacing the fuel pump relay in the black box in the engine compartment. Whatever work they were doing may have blown that. If you don't hear the Fuel Pump whine when you turn the key to "on", but the engine is cranking, then the relay is first place to look. Second thing to check is the Inertia Switch that shuts off the fuel pump in an accident. If the truck gets bumped hard enough, that could activate. All you have to do is push the button in to reset. Use the search link above to find more specific information.

My favorite link for EEC-IV codes and self-tests (dalidesign.com) has been removed, so I no longer have a favorite EEC-IV self-test link to refer people to. There are several other sets of instructions on the net (www.therangerstation.com in the tech library, www.fordfuelinjection.com, and many others) or any self-respecting manual.

They think the fault code is 121?? That would be TPS code. Now, was it a KOEO code (before separator pulse), or CM code (after separator pulse) or both. A TPS code doesn't have anything to do with the fuel pump. Does the fuel pump run? What is the fuel pressure at the fuel rail?

TPS issue?

Hi,

Thank you very much for your reply.

I bought two new relays and found out that there are three of them. Both of them were the same relay. But, this did not help the problem.

I still can't hear the fuel pump kicking in.

The problem I have is that the car mechaninc is running out of options and he wishes that he would never met me or my Explorer.

Today, I went to the shop and I noticed there is no pressure on the gaspedal?

I'm not a car mechanic and never had any desire to be one but it seem like I'm going to have to become one.

Based on what I've read in this forum could it be that the TPS is bad (approx, €65 ($85). Or is there something else I also could look at?

My car mechanic thinks that we need to "zero"/reset the computer. Is this possible and can you do it w/o any special tools? where do i find the information for resetting the computer if possible?

Aalarm went off as well

i just remembered one more thing.

The alarm went off when I open the rear door. this also heppened to my mechanic earlier in the week.

could the alarm system have shut down the fuel somehow?

/Stefan

The alarm could cause starting problems if it is activated (thinks the truck is being stolen). If it is a factory alarm, then the FP should run I believe. The system cuts off power to the ignition is my understanding. An aftermarket alarm may be set to cut off the fuel pump entirely.

There is a fuel injection cut off switch that cuts the pump if in an accident. Has the button popped up. The switch is located on the passenger side below the glove box on the side of the foot well. Just press down to re-set it.
