Guys, I have a V6 2000 Explorer Sport, 51k miles on it. I drive very normal, 55 highway miles per day. I'm getting 230-250 miles to a tank. Isn't this bad for a V6 truck? MY V8 1998 mountaineer gets better gas milage! As for a tune up, only the plugs haven't been changed, otherwise everything else has been done. Any suggestions?

Chris

Can't relate to the SOHC, but my OHV would run 19-22mpg on highway runs. What MPH are you running on the highway? I run 68-70MPH to achieve that. My truck has 180k on the clock, and I'm getting similar mileage to you with about 70% highway mileage (about 26 miles/day highway) keep in mind that a few hard accel merges will kill your MPG.

There is negligible difference in the V6 to V8 mileage from my experiences. Ever since the V8's came out, it's been a very small difference. Even now- my dad is looking at new Explorers- V6 gets 14cty/20hwy and the V8 gets 13cty/20hwy

i get that on my SOHC, maybe a little more... some times 270... looking to improve too

the listed 20mpg is figured that cheating way...you know. on a dyno, no ac after a tune up, with mega octain gas....

Yes, that mileage is very low for a SOHC.

You can indeed do better.

My driving style is pretty decent, at least in this truck. I may accelerate a few times hard, but I wouldn't expect to lose that much. I would think 20 mpg highway for a V6 would be standard. Maybe I should change the plugs? I guess the bad gas milage wasn't because of the gasket leak. :(

Thanks

i get 18 mpg driving 50 mi a day, mixed driving. and this is cruising. i do not accelerate from a stop fast and never floor it.

i get about 20-22 mpg highway, avg 390 per tank.

thats really good, im lucky to get above 13 mpg mixed.

I drive city, about 15 miles a day never going faster than 40mph and I get get about 220-230 miles on a full tank. Freeway driving got me 250-270 on a full tank, so it seems about right. My engine is the SOHC 4.0L V-6. Unfortunately these engines are famous (infamous) for poor mileage. Yours sounds typical.

i get 350 per tank highway

Really? Where did you get this information?
x2

I got 24mpg on a straight highway trip from high point nc to oak island nc.
260 mile trip took 3/4 of a tank to get there.

I get similiar crappy mileage too with my Sport DOHC V6. I haven't tuned the truck up yet though and plan to do that this Spring.

For those who are getting crappy mileage, have you performed a full tune-up yet? (Plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, pcv, clean MAF & TB, and even sea-foam)

hey steeda sports never came with the DOHC engine. They either come with the SOHC or OHV.

Anyways I dunno how much mpg I get in my 01 sport.

With original 3.27 open differential, 13mpg city and 19mpg highway.

After changing to 4.10LS, 17mpg city and 18mpg highway.

Well worth the $450 I spent.
