My MPG SUCKS for a v6!!!

I'm going to assume that that's a typo on his part. Being that the S key and the D key are right beside one another.

One thing I'm noticing is that the guys who say they are getting 350 miles to the tank are driving 4-doors. I'm not sure, but I'm assuming the 4door has a larger tank. My 99 Sport with the 4.0 SOHC with 80k gets 260 miles per tank, with a 17.5 gallon tank. And thats the best I've seen. Of course, other things affect furl mileage, like modifications. I've got a small lift, 265/75R16s, as apposed to 255/75R16s. As far as I'm concerned, that should even out, though, the tires may be a little heavier, but at the same time they are larger in circumfrence, so they are turning lower RPMs at the higher speeds. I could be wrong, though.

i get 160-170 to a tank with new plugs , wires , fuel filter , air filter and tires checked i gave up even trying to make it better

The 4 door has a 21 gallon tank, larger than the Sport.

Gas mileage should not be expressed in how many miles per tank; mileage is MPG - miles per gallon.

Another item to focus on in determining gas mileage is testing over several tanks of gas, and dividing miles driven by gallons added. I say that because even when I ran out of gas a couple of times and limped to a gas station I topped out at just under 17 gallons. So to divide my miles driven by 17.5 would not be correct.

To answer the original question I too would suggest reading aldive's thread.

Sorry, when I say the SOHC V-6's are infamous for getting bad mileage, it's just from a lot of posts here saying they get anywhere from 13-18mpg on them. Ford's official specs say these engines get 17/21mpg. Whichever source you or I choose to believe, these really are poor mileage ratings, don't you think?

It's called a Typo.

Anyways, westph2k6 brought up a good point about the 4-doors and their larger sized tanks...also measuring by tank size isn't the most accurate. I fill up, reset trip odo and drive for about 200 miles or so <at this point my gauge is below the 1/4 mark>. I fill up again and record the amount of gallons that I just used and perform my calculation. For the most part my mpg is the same from tank to tank.

My 2001 and 2003 Sport(s) I was getting between 15-19 MPG with about 50 miles/day, and about 85% highway. I'm not positive, but I think its the same SOHC engine?

When I first got mine I was getting an average of 18 MPG with a top of 22 on a trip... then all of a sudden it dropped to about 16 MPG average. I changed the plugs and wires and did all the other maintence with nothing, it's only got 82K on it. I'm assuming it's the new tires, but I'm not sure...

I get two mpg less (now 16 mixed, 20 highway) since I switched tires from well-worn Michelins to some new Kumhos. The new tires grip really well, but I guess lower gas mileage is the trade off.

'95 5spd 2wd 4.0 liter
I just measured 16 mpg, city driving and in some very cold weather.

make sure your air filter is clean and spray some carb cleaner on your MAF sensor. if that is dirty then your gonna get crap for mileage. maybe its bad? I get about 19 highway in mine and about 320 miles on a tank

I got 370 miles out of a tank on my 98 v8... highway

I got a 1998 Sport 4.0l SOHC 145000 KM on it (Canadian) this might be a little confusing for some,on 55Litres of Gas i get about 350KM if im lucky which is what ive been getting for the 4 months ive owned my x (which i love btw) im getting about 14MPG if the online calculators are correct which for me is terrible compared to my tiny little 4 cylinder car but hey its a truck 4x4 and its got some issues and im kinda stuck on what to do here so input would be nice i am an apprentice mechanic so i know enough about cars to get me by but if anyone has any experience with this code (Bank 1 catalyst Low efficiency) now im still thinking oxygen sensor and im thinking its the downstream on bank 1, and i know that this will destroy gas mileage so i figure if i fix this and do a complete tune up and tear apart my front diff (needs new bearings) than my mileage will hopefully be up in the 17 or 18 range. so any thoughts?

the listed 20mpg is figured that cheating way...you know. on a dyno, no ac after a tune up, with mega octain gas....

Oh brother....

i got the SOHC...and i have the typical ford problem....fully loaded or empty i get the same milage.....CRAPPY! 15...city highway uphill downhill, old tires or the new crabbers.....always 15

I suspect that efficiency is heavily dependent on how well the timing chains are doing their thing.

Back in 99, Ford replaced all of my chains, guides, tensioners, the intake manifold gasket and a bunch of other stuff (took them two weeks). After I got it back, it was really dialed in, and I was getting 20MPG city and 25-28 highway.

Eight years later, the chains are rattling again and it sounds like a diesel at times - and my mpg has plummeted (13-15 city, 20 highway).

I would say that gas mileage is also heavily dependent on how one drives, the type of fuel used, and the maintenance and/or mods made to the engine. The harder you accelerate the more gas you waste.

BTW - Aldive, have you ever had the timing chain problems with your SOHC, just curious?
