Hi All...I love this place... I bought my 1999 base 4dr exporer with 117,000 miles in great shape. However....It seems incredibly loud on the road noise and seems to have a very rough ride. Could I need shocks or somethings else already? Maybe its the tires?? They are 235/75/r15, and are called STAMPEDE...I never heard of them. My acceleration is very loud and it seems something is holding it back. I tried cleaning the MAF with shots of air but was afraid to put a cleaner on it cause it looked so fragile...anyway...it didn't seem to help. If anyone has any ideas on the above considering the milage...please let me know...thanks alot

Barry

well, i guess it could be a number of things. what engine is in it?

The rough/loud ride could be caused by junky tires. When those ware out I would get a set of Michelin Cross Terrain tires and you'll be much happier. WHat engine does it have. is the exhaust rusted? How loud is loud to you? is this our first truck or have you had others? The explorer will be louder then cars just by nature, but it shouldn;t be terraibly loud.
good luck!

Ok...the truck has the 6 cylinder 4.0 pushrod which I hear is not the preferred one. This is my first truck but I had test driven a couple of others and they didn't seem this harsh. Maybe I read too many reports of it being car like! Hahaha.I have not checked the exhaust system but will...its a southern thruck thats been on the road only 2 1/2 years. The exgine seems fine except when I try to accelerate too quckly. You can tell it doesn't like it by a louder than expected roar that has no...ummmph. Hard to describe! Thanks for your concerns. The tires prob have another 2 years to go but I will look into the michelins

The stock 4.0L pushrod doesn't have much umph stock. when you say harsh does it shift rough or something? It might need to just be serviced (transmission flush etc) Let me know what you find in terms of the exhaust.

my friend has a 99 X 4 door with only 35k miles on it. Its louder then my 98 sport. Its pretty much normal for a 4.0 on a X to be a bit loud. Seems like all the 99's I've seen have a bit of noise to them. Hey i don't see that as a bad thing since it is a truck. Makes me want to trade in for a diesel.

It does not shift rough...just the engine roar....I will let you know on the exhaust....I am glad it may just be the 99 engine but unhappy that it won't get better! I was almost hoping for a problem that I can fix! The transmission was flushed when I bought it. I need to check that they filled it correctly. Thanks again

Maybe all your truck needs is a better audio system..then you can;t hear the roar of the engine :-D

OHHHH THANKS ALOT 95XLT....HAHA =)

My '99 is loud as well. Friend has a '01 XLS and his is quieter than mine ever was. Probably just a '99 thing, besides, reminds me that I am driving a truck, not a Stang! 113K is a lot of miles in 2.5yrs. I'm about to hit 60K in that time, and I thought that was alot. Tires are probably crappy. When I changed the Crapstones to my Michelins, the difference was incredible. Can hear the radio on the first bar of the volume setting while driving now.....

Tom....thanks for the encouragement.....
(waiting out the days till my tires wear out)

Wow, that really makes me feel better about me having 122,000 miles on my 1996. Makes me feel a lot better indeed.

Barry, spend the $ for some new tires! It's well worth your sanity and may delay the need for hearing aids until you're way to old to understand what people are saying to you anyway! :D

are ya sure ya dont have flowmasters and didnt know it? hehe j/k
it could just be a bad exhuast leak. wich would explain the lack of power and the louder noise.
take it to a local exhuast shop and ask them.
dont take it to ford. they will tell you you need all new heads or some BS.
