My quest for 30 MPG - Ford Explorer Gas Mileage Tips

Al when you installed the Ford Racing TB how did you setup the throttle set screw?

No adjustment was needed, it was right on.

How did you know that it was right on?

I am looking for the method necessary to adjust the throttle plate

--Joe

Al here is an idea..

If the throttle plate adjustment can have a small range such that the IAC can keep the idle RPM correct. Would that mean that you can open the throttle plate slightly allowing more air in per a given position, possibly leaning out the mixture slightly.

If that can be done then the thread regarding the TPS adjustments increasing MPG on some explorers may have an explanation. If you can for a given position of the throttle plate make the PCM think that you are at a slightly less open posistion that would allow more air for the same fuel.

If I understand the system the TPS tells the PCM where the throttle plate is then apllies the correct amount of fuel though the injectors. If the PCM can be fooled even slightly by offsetting the TPS, this may allow for a slightly leaner mixture.

Any thoughts?

A leaner mixture can be damaging to the motor. I prefer to set the AF mix with a meter on the dyno.

how come i get 11 mpg my x is all stock new plugs and wires, new tires, new wheel bearings, brand new tranny, new air filter

cause like the rest of us you have a heavy ass explorer. ..I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM ON MY 1995 AND 2002.

HEAVY FOOT!!!

I think the o2 sensors won't be fooled.

Because you are from Esko. lol

I have the 4.0 OHV V6 and I get about 15 mpg all city. Bad mileage can be caused by many things. It can be the way you drive, or mechanical problems. How many miles do you have? 11 is really low for an all stock explorer, assuming you have the V6. Changing the axle fluid is a good idea, because I have heard people seeing very nice improvements from that. The truck rolls down the road with less resistance. There are just so many things. Winter gas mileage is always worse than summer, but that is still quite low in my opinion.

I get really crap mileage too, but I know why that is.. Also my TCC solinoid isnt functioning properly so overdrive is about 2300rpm at 45mph.

I got a 96 Explorer, almost completely stock, except for new water pump, alternator, battery, and 4th, yes 4th, transmission and a 750 watt inverter for power. I get between 15 and 15 MPG, depending on how fast/agressively I'm driving. I put on about 50 to 60 miles a day and used to get about 300 miles to the tank, now I get 260 to 280. Any ideas why I'm loosing mileage to the tank? All new fluids except for the transfer cases I think. No mods to the outside or anything. To be honest, I'm extremely jealous about the 30MPG, I'd be happy with 23 to 25, though having been hit 4 times in my car with no damage, I'm not giving it up anytime soon. Any ideas for the gas mileage? Is it too late to switch the fluids to synthetic if they aren't already?

PS I got 150k miles on it.

hey al have you tried a windage tray? ive only seen hp gains but it obviosly would gain mpg. just a thought.

Al, have you noticed a difference in your mileage since they starting putting 10% Ethanol in all of the fuel? And have you seen any improvements from your new ignition module?
