My quest for 30 MPG - Ford Explorer Gas Mileage Tips

you must have missed my sarcasm...

on a serious note, once you've fine tuned your HHO kit down the road, we'd appreciate a parts list to build our own... after all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery..

following your past work I've already gained 4 mpg, and with gas only heading up, I'm anxious to keep going with the mods..

I intend to share what I learn.

definately can't wait to hear about additional testing.
that's quite a high gain, for something that can be made so inexpensively.

Don't get too excited so soon; its only data from a single run under very uncontrolled situations ( "in town" driving ).

Al did you do any data logging by chance? I wonder what the difference will be in sensor readings. It would be nice to be able to use a single tune and avoid some special device etc. I'd like to know what different results would be from a basic add on device, versus that and special tuning(or other VMU device). Sounds promising, take your time.

Hello all. I'm new to this site. I actually came here because of the HHO buzz. Prior to coming to this site I researched other "free" information I could find on the internet. Here is a link to one person's attempt at the O2 sensor dilema. This seems to be a good approach (in my inexperienced opinion). As far as I can tell, he isn't trying to sell us anything.

I haven't installed my HHO generator yet, but have been doing some preliminary mileage testing. I'm a bit surprised by the results. My point is that we can inpact our mpg significantly via our driving habits. I had always heard this, but never believed the magitude would be so significant.

1998 Ford Explorer - 4.0

Past 5 years (normal driving) - 18 mpg
Past 5 years HWY (73 MPH) - 18 mpg
Recently HWY (65 MPH) - 21 mpg
Recently HWY (60 MPH) - 23 mpg
Recently driving like an old man (slow starts, anticipating stops, turn off ignition at red lights, etc.) - 23 mpg

Looks like you have a great start on some excellent mileage.

Good luck ....

I always take it easy. Its part of living and dying in three quarter time :)

That's what I would've thought. I wouldn't think you can get any more conservative in your driving unless you let it idle up to speed :D That's what was making me think the HHO kit was doing more for mileage.. Looking forward to more results.

Was just reading though the first 10 pages or so and was wondering if this should not be some sort of a front page thread with maybe a recap of the modifications and what works best instead of deciphering through almost 80 pages. Just a thought without wanting to rock any boats :)

trust me, you want to read it all. i spent one night reading through every post, and it's a lot easier becuase you know what he has and hasn't done, also what hasn't been said. keeps a lot of the unnecessary chatter down. it's also an interesting read when you're bored

I do think it would be nice to have a summary post with a list of all the modifications Al has made for better mileage and are currently being used on his vehicle.

25mpg in town is insane. I am getting 14 mixed highway and city. I am trying to apply some of Al's modifications to my explorer.

just go to the link to his truck in his signature.. lists out everything, most of which have links to threads of when and how he installed it, and what mpg benefits they gave him...

Al's getting MPG like a Toyota Camry. That is ####ing crazy. :D

50

Ive been going 50 on the highway with my 96 xlt...people dont like it but im in no rush... the last gear shifts at 43 about so i think 50 is a good speed to go...i got 23/24 mpg on my last tank :miles were 50/50 city, highway

Speed kills mileage.

Recently HWY (60 MPH) - 23 mpg
Recently driving like an old man (slow starts, anticipating stops, turn off ignition at red lights, etc.) - 23 mpg

Smart driving with a light right foot, definitely helps.

Just wanted to bring attention to your last two numbers. It's been shown that turning off the ignition at red lights has negligible results. What little money you do save should probably be put into a trust fund for a new starter.

But congrats though and welcome to the forum!

My Oxygen sensor extenders arrived yesterday. They along with new upstream O2 sensors will be installed very soon.

That and I would think that the initial start and rev up of the engine probably comes close to negating any fuel saved during the 60 seconds the engine wasn't running.

I shut my engine off when I miss certain very long lights. I believe that most FI engines use about 20 seconds of fuel when starting. The starter wear is more important to me, I start my work truck easily 20 times per day.

Latest mileage data with HHO

I Just refilled after 358 miles. It took 14.7 gallons. This netted 24.35 MPG. This is a decrease of 1.43. Due to the uncontrolled conditions of “in town” driving, I consider the mileage as equal.

Fuel used BP 89; all “in town” driving.

I have not installed the O2 sensor extenders. This should happen this week.

Also, I hope to have a new HHP generator read sometime today.
