Ok Im new to this but I just want to see if this would be a pretty good set-up.

Alpine CDE-9881 Head Unit
Power Acustik SL4-1000 4 CH. AMP
PAIR OF ALPINE SP-R57C 5x7 / 6x8 600 WATT 2 WAY CAR STEREO SPEAKERS

And im not sure about the subwoofers yet. But im pretty sure I can connect the speakers and the subs to the 4 channel amp. PRetty good or no?

Currently I'm doing extensive research for a good head unit (ie. surf the internet all nights long).
Was hesitating between Pioneer 6900 or 7900 and the new Alpines. IDA-x001 looks awesome but in terms of features and sound is a letdown.
Kenwood 2-DIN units are great but not sure I want to put over $1k into the whole thing.

Which leaves me with the Alpine CDA-988x series. They ipod % search feature is awesome it's the best way to scroll in large libraries.
I started out with the 9881 like you suggested but then researched it more and found that 9885 is probably worth the extra money. Full graphical screen , multi line text (9881 has only one line). So it can display artist+title at the same time. And it seems to have a CLOCK that's in the corner all the time. A dash clock is very important to me and if I take away the stock radio then the new one must provide it.

I'm planning to buy this unit within the next two weeks.

(Pioneer was a strong contender but their blue animated screens just look hideous.)

i have a 9885 sitting under my bed. had it installed for 2 weeks and decided i wanted a double din screen so i went with the iva-w205. i would suggest the w205 if you want a great head unit with a lot of options. it also has much better sound than my pioneer head unit had before i went to alpine. anyway, if you would be interested in getting a good deal on a pretty much brand new 9885, let me know.

Can you configure the region on the 9885? US / Europe? That's my biggest worry. I was considering getting the whole pack from Crutchfield and have it shipped over to Switzerland but you guys only have the odd FM frequencies (.1 .3 .5 ...so on). Over here it's the full range .1 .2 .3 .4 ...... and while the model # is the same they are pre-set to the different regions.
Some brands allow you to change this (jvc I think) some don't. Having read the Alpine manual I think you cannot. Unless you found a way....

If it's only a 4 channel amp, you CAN NOT connect a Sub Woofer to it.

You will need a 5 channel amp for it to work correctly.

I am not a fan of Power Acustic amps. But for the price you can't go wrong. It looks like a good start. Nasty he can run a sub off of that amp. It is bridgable with a low pass filter. Is it ideal? No. Will it work? Yes. I would recommend a 10" 4 Ohm sub. Maybe the 10" Alpine Type R model swr-1022d Run the front speakers in stereo and a sub in mono off of the amp. Then run the rear speakers off of the Alpine HU. Best of luck. Let us know how it all turns out.
