hey fellas, i thought what happened to me over the past few weeks is a cool story worth sharing:
about a month ago, i was trolling craigslist, and found a posting for a position as an installer at a rack and hitch shop. they sold and installed hitches, brake controllers, wiring, trailer wiring, roof mounted bike racks, baskets, crossbars, cargo boxes, aftermarket bumpers and all kinds of stuff people use in the great outdoors. i thought to myself, hey that might be a cool place to work at to learn how to do some of this stuff. plus, i found out that they have awesome discounts on anything you can put on a car including arb bumpers, thule and yakima products, curt hitches, and all kinds of other stuff. employees also get huge discounts on ski lifts and resort stays up in the lake tahoe area which i frequent a ton.
the job was part time, didnt pay crap, and didnt offer many hours. i thought to myself on a whim that id write them about possibly interviewing. a week later, i kinda forgot i had contacted them and out of nowhere the manager calls me up and asks if i want to interview. i said sure. so i go in there and these two guys interviewing me look at my resume, and say "you are aware that we only pay 12 bucks an hour, that this is a part time position, you are currently employed and you have a history of making much much more than what we can offer you. why do you want to work here?"
i told them that i was an outdoor enthusiast, i use a lot of the products they offer, that i wasnt interested in working there for the money, and that i was more interested in learning more about doing installs and customizing. the guys asked me if i had any experience working in a shop or as an installer. i told them nope, but that i have been working on cars since i was a teenager, and that i modded out my truck myself including the lift, the lockers, the roof basket, hitch, cb radio, and all the other stuff that was on it. and right out the window from where we were sitting, was my sport trac sitting parked in the street in all her glory.
the guys looked at my truck out the window and said "damn, you werent kidding, you really did outfit that thing." they said, did you do all that yourself and i told them i did. a few days after the interview they offered me the PT position. so i guess its safe to say that my sport trac landed me a job! its nothing big, its just a job im doing a few hours on the weekend, i still have my regular gig, but ive been learning a lot, and i can get my hands on stuff like thule and yakima products, arb products, and all kinds of other stuff like that at cost. another cool thing about the gig is that i get fat discounts on ski lift passes, im talking paying 20 bucks for a lift pass instead of 75 bucks. and on the last wed of every month i get to go to kirkwood ski resort up in the sierras for free. one more cool thing about the gig is that i get to use some of the tools in their shop that i dont have at home like tube cutters and various types of grinders for stuff that ill be working on.
ive been working there on the last couple of weekends, and im looking to outfit my gf's jeep with some racks and stuff like that. my regular gig is picking up, and i hope it doesnt have me quitting this gig, if i can work there from 10-20 hours a week, that would be awesome. just thought id share this story, another triumph for the EF in my opinion!
